The Uttar Pradesh government has introduced the Mahila Udyami Credit Yojana (Women Entrepreneur Credit Scheme) to promote entrepreneurship among rural women and strengthen the state’s rural economy. The scheme aims to benefit nearly one crore women associated with Self-Help Groups (SHGs) across Uttar Pradesh by providing access to interest-free loans of up to Rs 1 lakh.
By improving access to capital, the initiative seeks to help women establish small businesses, expand existing enterprises and achieve greater financial independence. It also aligns with the broader objective of creating more Lakhpati Didis—women who earn a sustainable income through entrepreneurial activities.
KEY FEATURES OF THE SCHEME
The Mahila Udyami Credit Yojana is designed to make credit more accessible to women seeking to start or expand small businesses.
Interest-free loans: Eligible beneficiaries can receive loans of up to 1 lakh at zero interest, reducing the cost of borrowing for small entrepreneurs.
Loans in three instalments: To help women plan their businesses and access funds in stages, the loan amount is divided into three instalments:
First instalment: Rs 20,000
Second instalment: Rs 30,000
Third instalment: Rs 50,000
Together, the three instalments amount to Rs 1 lakh.
Dedicated credit cards: Women entrepreneurs are provided with dedicated credit cards to facilitate access to funds and manage business transactions.
Repayment period: Borrowers are given up to three years to utilise the funds and repay the loan, according to the scheme details outlined in the source material.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR THE SCHEME?
The scheme primarily targets rural women who are members of organised Self-Help Groups in Uttar Pradesh. Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:
SHG membership: The applicant must be an active member of a registered Self-Help Group affiliated with the State Rural Livelihood Mission (SRLM).
Uttar Pradesh domicile: The applicant must be a permanent resident of Uttar Pradesh.
Business purpose: The loan must be used to establish a new micro-enterprise or expand an existing household business.
Potential business activities include tailoring, handicrafts, pickle-making, small retail shops and dairy farming. These enterprises can provide women with opportunities to convert existing skills and household-based activities into sources of income.
HOW DOES THE SCHEME COMPLEMENT CM-YUVA?
The Mahila Udyami Credit Yojana complements other state government initiatives aimed at promoting entrepreneurship, including the Mukhyamantri Yuva Udyami Vikas Abhiyan (CM-YUVA).
While the Mahila Udyami Credit Yojana focuses on women associated with Self-Help Groups and provides loans of up to Rs1 lakh for micro-enterprises, CM-YUVA offers a broader financing opportunity for eligible entrepreneurs looking to establish businesses in the service and manufacturing sectors.
Under CM-YUVA, eligible applicants can access interest-free, collateral-free loans of up to Rs 5 lakh. The two initiatives therefore address different financing needs, with the SHG-focused scheme targeting smaller enterprises and CM-YUVA offering support for projects requiring greater investment.
Together, the programmes are intended to widen access to institutional credit and encourage entrepreneurship across different segments of the state's economy.
A PUSH TOWARDS WOMEN-LED DEVELOPMENT
Access to affordable finance remains an important factor in helping rural women establish independent sources of income. Small businesses often require initial capital to purchase raw materials, equipment and other essentials, but access to formal credit can be a challenge for those operating at the household or community level.
By offering interest-free loans, the Mahila Udyami Credit Yojana seeks to ease this financial barrier and create opportunities for women to start or expand their businesses. For members of Self-Help Groups, the initiative could provide a route to turn existing skills and small-scale activities into more sustainable enterprises.
However, the scheme's impact will depend on effective implementation, awareness among eligible beneficiaries and the timely availability of credit. Access to business training, market linkages and guidance on managing finances could also influence whether these enterprises remain viable over the long term.
The initiative reflects Uttar Pradesh's broader effort to promote women-led entrepreneurship, strengthen rural livelihoods and expand economic opportunities at the grassroots level. Its long-term success will ultimately depend on whether the financial assistance translates into sustainable businesses, higher household incomes and greater economic independence for rural women.
