PROVO, Utah — Notre Dame football’s first loss in more than 13 months sent the Irish reeling in the latest US LBM Coaches Poll.
Coach Marcus Freeman’s “Leave No Doubt” crew plummeted from the No. 2 spot to No. 8 on Sunday, Oct. 18.
Miami (6-0) is the new top-ranked team after surviving an upset bid from Florida State. The Hurricanes, national runners-up to Indiana last season, visit Notre Dame Stadium on Nov. 7 in a must-win game for the Irish.
Now 6-1 after falling 28-24 on the road to previously eighth-ranked Brigham Young, the Irish were part of a significant reshuffling of the national top 10 after a busy weekend of upsets.
Five of the top seven teams in last week’s coaches poll lost, including three members of the rugged Southeastern Conference: former No. 1 Georgia, former No. 6 Texas and former No. 7 Alabama.
BYU moved up to No. 3 behind Miami and one-loss Ohio State.
For Notre Dame, which heads into its only bye week of the fall, a neutral site meeting with unranked Navy awaits on Halloween in Foxborough, MA.
SMU, 5-1 after a home win over Virginia, is the only other ranked team remaining on Notre Dame’s much-maligned schedule. The Mustangs, who moved up two spots to No. 20 in the coaches poll, visited South Bend on Nov. 21.
