Apple’s new HomeView won’t be launching in the European Union, with the company confirming that ongoing regulatory disputes are preventing it from bringing the smart home device to the region.
The decision marks a significant development in Apple’s ongoing clash with EU regulators, as restrictions that previously affected software features are now extending to hardware availability.
Apple confirmed the restriction in a footnote, explaining that HomeView relies on its upgraded Siri AI, which is currently unavailable to European users.
“Apple HomeView is not available for sale in the European Union, as Siri AI is currently unavailable in iOS in the EU,” the company stated, adding that it is working with regulators to find a way forward.
The issue centres on the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which requires major technology companies designated as gatekeepers to make certain features and services accessible to competitors. Apple argues that these requirements could compromise user privacy by forcing it to open up parts of its ecosystem to third parties.
This isn’t the first time European users have missed out on Apple features because of the dispute. iPhone Mirroring, Mac Live Activities and Siri AI have also faced restrictions in the region, although HomeView represents a more significant step as it involves an entire product rather than individual software capabilities.
Apple has also raised concerns about how much user information competing companies could potentially access under the DMA. The company previously claimed that Meta, the owner of Facebook, had requested access to more private user data than was necessary for its services.
EU regulators, however, have rejected Apple’s argument that the interoperability requirements threaten privacy, maintaining that the rules are intended to promote fair competition without compromising user protections.
For European customers, the situation leaves HomeView’s future uncertain. Apple hasn’t provided a timeline for when the device might become available in the region, and its statement suggests a launch will depend on resolving the ongoing disagreement over Siri AI.
Until then, European users will have to sit this one out, with no guarantee that HomeView will eventually make its way to the EU.
