Tuesday was a busy day for the Miami Dolphins, with the front office making several roster moves. The Dolphins swapped kickers on Tuesday, bring back Zane Gonzalez and waiving Riley Patterson. Patterson was 7-for-0 on field goals this season and 5-for-6 on extra point attempts. After connecting on 93.1 percent of this field goal attempts, including 3-of-4 from over 50 yards, last year, Patterson’s accuracy seem to fall off this year, but a bigger issue seemed to be on kickoffs.
“We did try to kick them out of the end zone; that was discussed and just not executed the way that we wanted it to be…yeah, several of them were supposed to be touchbacks and weren’t,” head coach Jeff Hafley explained on Monday when asked about the team’s special teams issues and lack of simply kicking the ball for touchbacks rather than relying on the coverage unit.
The Dolphins held a tryout for kickers on Tuesday, including former seven-time Pro Bowl selection Justin Tucker, and ultimately brought back Gonzalez. The Cleveland Browns’ 2017 seventh-round draft pick, Gonzalez landed on injured reserve during the preseason with Miami this past summer. He was released with an injury settlement and now returns to to the Dolphins, signing with the practice squad.
Miami was not done with their roster moves. They also promoted rookie edge rusher Rodney McGraw from the practice squad and waived edge rusher Andre Jones Jr. The potentially surprise move of the day came with the news the Dolphins were waiving cornerback Storm Duck.
A 2024 undrafted free agent out of Louisville, Duck was on the physically unable to perform list this year as he recovered from a knee injury sustained last year. He returned to practice three weeks ago, and the team has until today to decide whether to add him to the active 53-man roster or keep him on the PUP for the rest of the year. Instead, Miami moved on from Duck.
