Apple may bring touchscreen to MacBook Pro but does the Mac even need one?

Apple makes fantastic large-screen touch devices. And no, I’m not talking about MacBooks. I’m talking about iPads. However, that may finally change as the company is heavily expected to finally unveil its long-rumoured touchscreen MacBook. According to reports, the first touchscreen MacBook Pro may feature an OLED display, a slimmer design, and a Dynamic Island among the expected upgrades. The new laptop is expected to be unveiled on October 28, with sales reportedly beginning on November 6, 2026. Of course, nothing is official yet, but the possibility of such a device raises an interesting question. Would a touchscreen make the MacBook Pro better, or would it be otherwise? After all, Apple’s laptops already have excellent trackpads. So, what exactly would a touchscreen bring to the Mac?

Apple may finally be warming up to touchscreens

For as long as we know, Apple has resisted putting touchscreens on its laptops for years. Steve Jobs famously argued in 2010 that using a touchscreen on a vertical laptop display could cause arm fatigue. At the time, Apple’s stance was clear: a laptop should be controlled with a keyboard and trackpad, while the iPad was more suited to touch.

But things have changed since then. We now use our phones and tablets alongside our laptops more than ever, and switching between touch controls and a trackpad feels natural on some apps but awkward on others. Apple has also made its devices work more closely together, making the lack of touch input on a MacBook feel a little more noticeable. Perhaps that is why the idea of a touchscreen MacBook Pro no longer sounds as far-fetched as it once did.

Of course, adding a touchscreen does not mean Apple has to change how we use a MacBook. The keyboard and trackpad can still do most of the heavy lifting, with the screen coming in handy when you want to tap something quickly, zoom into an image, or swipe through content. The question is whether these small conveniences are enough to make a touchscreen worth having on a MacBook.

Where a touchscreen MacBook Pro might make sense

The most obvious benefit is convenience. Sometimes, tapping an icon, scrolling through a page or pinching to zoom into an image is simply quicker than moving a cursor around. A touchscreen would give MacBook users that option without forcing them to change how they normally work.

It could also make the Mac more useful when running mobile apps. Apple already allows certain iPhone and iPad apps to run on Macs, but interacting with software designed for touch using a trackpad can feel awkward. The same applies to features such as iPhone Mirroring, where direct interaction with on-screen controls could feel more natural.

Creative professionals could benefit, too. Photographers regularly zoom into images to check details, while video editors spend hours working with timelines, clips and on-screen controls. Touch input could make some of these tasks more intuitive, particularly when moving objects around or making quick adjustments. Granted, touch interactions may not replace a mouse, trackpad or dedicated creative controls, but it could complement them.

There are also reports of Apple preparing touch-friendly elements in macOS, including changes to Safari’s interface. If these features arrive alongside a touchscreen MacBook Pro, they may help make the experience feel more considered than simply adding touch hardware to an existing laptop.

Having said that, the quality of the software will matter more than the presence of the screen itself. A touchscreen is only useful if menus, buttons, and gestures work well with fingers.

Why a touchscreen MacBook might still be unnecessary

Here is the problem: most people do not use a laptop the way they use a tablet. When you’re working for hours, keeping your hands on the keyboard and trackpad is comfortable and efficient. Reaching forward to tap a screen repeatedly can become tiring, particularly when the display is positioned at a typical laptop viewing angle.

Then there is screen movement. A conventional MacBook hinge is designed to hold the display at a chosen angle, not necessarily to withstand constant tapping. Even a sturdy hinge can allow some wobble when you touch the screen. That could become irritating when navigating menus or making precise selections.

Software presents another challenge. macOS is a desktop operating system, and many applications are designed around a mouse pointer. Some controls are small, menus can be crowded, and complex editing tools often require precision that fingers cannot easily provide. Apple would need to address these issues without making the interface cumbersome for people who prefer a keyboard and trackpad.

There is also the question of overlap with the iPad. Apple already sells the iPad Pro with a Magic Keyboard, giving users a portable device that supports both touch and traditional laptop-style input. A touchscreen MacBook Pro could blur the distinction further, potentially leaving buyers wondering which device better suits their needs.

The MacBook Pro does not need to become an iPad

A touchscreen would not automatically make the MacBook Pro a better laptop. Its value would depend on how naturally it fits into everyday work. For some users, particularly those who regularly interact with images, video, and mobile apps, touch could be a welcome addition. Others may barely use it after the initial novelty wears off. That is perfectly fine, provided Apple does not compromise the existing experience or charge a steep premium for the feature.

The bigger opportunity is for Apple to offer choice without changing what makes the MacBook Pro useful in the first place. The keyboard, trackpad, desktop software, and performance still need to take priority.

Ultimately, I think a touchscreen MacBook Pro could be a useful addition, but I am not convinced it is something most Mac users have been asking for. Apple already has the iPad for people who prefer interacting directly with a screen, while the MacBook has its own strengths. If Apple can make touch actually useful without compromising the traditional laptop experience, I have no problem with it. But if all it does is let us tap the screen instead of using the trackpad, I am not sure what problem it really solves.
