Senior Chief Sikufele of Manyinga and Kabompo districts has commended the government for its continued efforts to protect communities from malaria through the provision of insecticide-treated mosquito nets.
Senior Chief Sikufele says the distribution of treated mosquito nets is an important intervention in reducing malaria infections and protecting vulnerable groups, particularly pregnant women and children.
He was speaking in Manyinga today when a delegation from the Kabompo District Health Department paid a courtesy call on him over the commencement of the mosquito net distribution exercise.
Senior Chief Sikufele said that the consistent and correct use of mosquito nets was essential in preventing mosquito bites and reducing malaria cases in his chiefdom.
The traditional leaders however, expressed concern over the misuse of mosquito nets by some residents, who reportedly use them for activities such as maize shelling and fishing urging them to use the nets for their intended purpose.
Senior Chief Sikufele further emphasised the importance of community participation in the fight against malaria, calling on residents to take advantage of the government-supported intervention by ensuring that they sleep under mosquito nets every night.
The District Health Office has received a total of 53,956 insecticide-treated mosquito nets for distribution across the entire district.
The distribution comes against the backdrop of a significant malaria burden in the district, which recorded an incidence rate of 1,235.33 cases per 1,000 people in 2025.
The figures underscore the continued need for preventive measures, public awareness and community involvement in reducing malaria infections.
