WeChat's native HarmonyOS app now works with Huawei's voice assistant Celia through agent-to-agent (A2A) integration, letting users send messages and place calls to WeChat contacts by voice. According to IT Home, the capability arrived with version 8.0.22 of WeChat for HarmonyOS, and an introduction to the feature has since been published.
Users wake Celia and ask it to send a WeChat message to a contact, or to start a WeChat voice or video call with someone. When sending text, they can dictate the content in the same sentence, for example telling a friend they will arrive in ten minutes. If two contacts share a name or the request is unclear, Celia asks follow-up questions and only acts after the user confirms.
The scope is limited for now. Messages and calls work only with individual friends. Celia cannot yet post to group chats or start group calls, cannot send stickers, and does not work with WeChat's cloned-account feature. Users need the latest WeChat for HarmonyOS and Celia version 11.7.8.303 or later.
The feature is aimed at moments when hands are busy, such as driving, cooking, cleaning, carrying a child or exercising. It is also pitched at older users, people with poor eyesight and those less comfortable navigating a phone, for whom voice lowers the barrier to using WeChat.
Under the A2A model, the phone maker's system agent issues an instruction, WeChat receives it, completes the task and returns the result, with user authorization required for the link. In June, Chinese media reported that WeChat was working with Huawei, Honor, Xiaomi, OPPO and vivo to bring this assistant-to-WeChat capability to their devices. Honor shipped it first, enabling its YOYO assistant to send WeChat messages and start voice and video calls on its Magic8, 500 and X70 series phones. The HarmonyOS release brings the same kind of integration to Huawei's own platform.
The A2A route means actions pass through an interface that WeChat exposes and controls, rather than an assistant operating the app's screen on the user's behalf. That keeps chat functions inside WeChat while still letting the system assistant on each phone brand trigger them.
