Eagles Film Preview: The Panthers’ defense can be exploited

Each week, I’ll publish two film-room previews: one focusing on the offense and one on the defense. These are primarily film-based, focusing on the schemes, tendencies, and matchups that could shape Sunday’s game, with all statistics coming from the Fantasy Points Data Suite. I also record a video version for Patreon, where I break down the plays in greater detail and where you can further support my work.

Before getting into the football, I want to acknowledge the news about Jalen Hurts. The Eagles have ruled him out against the Panthers after discovering a superficial blood clot in his calf. First and foremost, I hope he makes a full recovery. His health matters far more than anything I’m about to discuss in this article. Obviously, his absence has a significant impact on this matchup and what the Eagles can realistically ask their offense to do. However, these previews are primarily about understanding the opponent: what the Panthers play, who their important players are, and where their weaknesses appear. Most of that analysis hasn’t changed. There are opportunities against this defense, even with a backup quarterback, but the Eagles will need to protect well enough and finally get something going on the ground to take advantage.

Pass Defense

The Panthers aren’t a particularly good defense overall, but parts of their passing defense deserve respect. Ejiro Evero uses a lot of single-high coverage, with Cover 3 forming the foundation of the defense. You will also see Cover 4, Cover 6, and occasional man coverage. This is predominantly a zone defense, but you can’t assume every snap will give the quarterback the same answers.

Their linebackers are particularly important to how they defend the middle of the field. Devin Lloyd and Bobby Okereke can read the quarterback, close underneath passing windows, and punish late throws. This is their biggest strength. Lloyd has been involved in all three of their interceptions this season, whether making the interception himself or helping create it

I would be careful about treating short throws over the middle as easy completions against this defense. Lloyd is dangerous when he can see the quarterback and drive on a route. His coverage has been stronger than his run defense this year. The Eagles need Tanner McKee to understand where he is before releasing the ball.

The Panthers have also played Cover 1 successfully. Their man-coverage sample is relatively small, but the results have been excellent, and some of the film shows defenders competing aggressively at the catch point. In the play below, Jaycee Horn breaks up the quick slant and creates an interception opportunity. That’s an excellent individual play supported by a linebacker being around the football.

However, there is a rather significant problem with using that play to describe the defense the Eagles will face: Horn won’t be playing! Neither will Mike Jackson. Losing both starting outside cornerbacks changes this secondary considerably, and the Panthers miss them massively. Their season-long coverage results include contributions from two players who won’t be available to help on Sunday.

The Panthers have shown they can execute these structures with their best corners, but the replacements haven’t been as reliable. Even with Hurts unavailable, the Eagles should have opportunities outside. I would let McKee throw the ball vertically against this defense.

The biggest obstacle to accessing those opportunities is the pass rush. I think the Panthers are pretty good here. They have two dangerous edge rushers. Their defense is at its best when the rush gets home quickly enough to prevent the secondary from having to cover for long.

Jaelan Phillips is a player Eagles fans know well. He can win in multiple ways, and his combination of athleticism and power gives tackles a lot to handle. He may have a hamstring issue, but I still expect him to play well if he is out there. This is a big test for Markel Bell.

Princely Umanmielen might be the most interesting player in their front. The second-year edge rusher has made a leap as a pass rusher. He was an explosive prospect coming out of college, and that athleticism is translating into impressive NFL reps. His ankle flexibility is outstanding. He is a true ‘bend the edge’ rusher.

He also has more than one answer. There are outside setups, changes of direction, and counters that make tackles work rather than simply preparing for a straight speed rush. His 21.8% pass-rush win rate and three sacks show how disruptive he can be. I don’t think he is a complete edge defender yet, but as a pass-rush specialist, he is playing very well.

I would expect the Panthers to give him opportunities against Bell, too. Evero also uses stunts and mugged A-gaps, presenting linebackers over the center before the snap, to complicate the protection. The offensive line needs to identify who is coming and pass off movement without creating the immediate free runners we’ve seen too often this season.

If the Eagles can protect, Akayleb Evans is the corner I would repeatedly test. He had a rough game against the Lions, giving up multiple big plays, and his coverage numbers this year are dreadful, considering he has only played in 3 games: 13 completions on 17 targets for 212 yards. 12.47 yards per target. The film backs it up, too.

When he has to transition and react to a receiver changing direction, he can concede separation. But I would also challenge him vertically. The Panthers play enough single-high coverage to give their outside corners difficult assignments, and Evans hasn’t shown he can consistently survive those situations.

The Panthers’ cornerback injuries should affect how aggressively the Eagles attack.

I wasn’t particularly impressed with their zone communication either. In some plays, defenders don’t appear coordinated when routes move between responsibilities, and the resulting space is far too easy for the offense to exploit. Tampa 2 and Cover 2 stood out as particular problems. Again, this is an issue when you have injuries in the secondary.

The Eagles should incorporate motion, shifts, and route combinations that force defenders to exchange receivers. You don’t need an incredibly complicated passing game to test communication. Moving a receiver before the snap, changing the strength of the formation, or sending routes through adjacent zones can force the defense to make decisions together. The Panthers haven’t consistently done that well.

Run Defense

The run defense is the part of this matchup the Eagles need to exploit. I wasn’t impressed. There are good individual players, but the unit gives up too much yardage and doesn’t tackle consistently enough once a runner reaches the second level. It’s been a very up-and-down unit. According to Fantasy Points Data, the Panthers allow the second-most rushing yards per game to running backs at 120, and their 5.39 yards per carry allowed to backs is the worst in the league. The next-highest figure is 5.18. That’s a significant weakness.

The missed tackles stood out most. There are opportunities to limit a run to a reasonable gain, but the first defender doesn’t finish, and suddenly the back is into space.

The interior is inconsistent too. Bobby Brown III hasn’t impressed me against the run, and the rotation includes weaker spots alongside the better defenders. Devin Lloyd’s run-defense results have been much less convincing than his pass coverage.

Of course, the Eagles’ own run blocking has been awful recently. A favorable opponent doesn’t magically fix missed assignments or blocks being lost immediately. The Panthers’ weakness sadly doesn’t guarantee a big afternoon. However, this is a much better opportunity to establish the ground game than some of the fronts the Eagles have faced, and whoever starts at running back should have an important role.

The one player I would try to avoid running directly at is Derrick Brown. He remains a very good run defender who can wreck a play if the offense gives him the opportunity. The Panthers have weaknesses inside, but Brown himself isn’t the player I would choose to challenge over and over.

I’d want the Eagles to know where he is and, where possible, work toward the more favorable matchups elsewhere in the front. If they do run at him, they need a sensible plan, not one lineman trying to handle him.

Final Thoughts

Hurts’ absence clearly changes the difficulty of the task, but it doesn’t remove the weaknesses in this defense. The Panthers are missing their two best outside corners, and the Eagles should have a workable offensive plan.

The danger is allowing their best players to control the game. Phillips and Umanmielen can expose poor protection. Lloyd can punish careless throws over the middle. Derrick Brown can destroy a run aimed straight at him.

I’m not expecting the offense to suddenly become excellent under these circumstances. But I do expect the coaches to produce a coherent plan against a defense with identifiable weaknesses. The Panthers can be attacked. The Eagles have to give their available players a realistic chance to do it. I’m just hoping McKee can turn up and do enough to get the job done.
