Terry Bradshaw has occupied the public consciousness for more than 50 years. He won four Super Bowls as the quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers before his Pro Football Hall of Fame induction in 1989, and since 1994, he has starred on Fox NFL Sunday.
Did Bradshaw also deliver an incredible performance in the 2006 romantic comedy Failure to Launch starring Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker? Yes, but that deserves its own article entirely.
All that to say, Terry Bradshaw, 78, is aware that his starriest years may be behind him, and he isn’t afraid to acknowledge it.
“I realize my time on television as a sports broadcaster is coming to an end,” Bradshaw said on “NBC News Daily,” per Rohan Nadkarni.
“I just love life. Billy Graham said, and I never forgot this quote, he said, ‘The day you retire is the day you start dying,'” Bradshaw said, noting, “I’m a workaholic, I love to work.”
Elsewhere in his NBC segment, Bradshaw promoted his new memoir, “Looking For Terry,” and transparently discussed his bouts with cancer and depression.
Bradshaw has deployed that transparency in regard to his status at Fox for years. His public flip-flopping on retirement is likely rooted in a man earnestly grappling with the end rather than a man talking out of both sides of his mouth, even if his indecisiveness dates back to at least 2008.
“I told my wife before I left the hotel room, I was sitting there, I said, ‘I’ve got two years left at Fox. I’m 76,'” Bradshaw said in February 2025. “It’s a young man’s game. I get that. Everybody wants their new [people]. I said, if we can get to the next Super Bowl [on Fox], I’ll be 80. I think that’s time. That’s pushing it.”
Bradshaw struck a similar tune in this Q&A with Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times published over the weekend.
“I love my job,” Bradshaw said. “This year was the first year that I got nervous. I wanted to extend my contract. So I signed through the Super Bowl. Two more years. I’ll be 80.”
Should the 2028-2029 NFL season prove to be the end of his broadcasting road, Bradshaw still has plenty of time for more on-air hijinks. The “Fox NFL Sunday” crew may want to put lids on their coffees, though.
