KUALA LUMPUR: Brazilian coach Joel Cornelli has officially parted ways with the national women's football team after 17 months at the helm, calling time on his tenure as head coach of the Malayan Tigress.
The 59-year-old took to Instagram on Thursday to confirm his departure, describing his stint in Malaysian football as the conclusion of a significant chapter in his coaching career.
"After 17 months as head coach of the Malaysia senior women's national team, it is time to close an important chapter of my professional journey," Cornelli wrote.
Cornelli expressed his gratitude to the national football leadership, specifically thanking former FA of Malaysia (FAM) honorary president Tan Sri Hamidin Amin, secretary-general Datuk Noor Azman Rahman, FAM exco and women's football committee chairman Datuk Suraya Yaacob, technical director Soleen Al-Zoubi and team official Sha Samshool for entrusting him with the role.
"Throughout this period, we worked with dedication and commitment, while beginning an important squad renewal process with the arrival of new players, building foundations for the team's future development," he said.
"My thanks to all the players, the coaching staff, and everyone who shared this journey with me. I leave with valuable experiences, lasting memories, and the satisfaction of having given my best with professionalism, respect, and passion for the game.
"I wish the Malaysia senior women's national team every success in the next chapter. Thank you, Malaysia, for these 17 months. New chapters, new challenges, same passion for football. Terima kasih, Malaysia!"
Cornelli was appointed in May last year to lead the national women's squad, taking over from Al-Zoubi, who was reassigned as FAM women's football technical director.
The well-travelled coach, who previously coached in South America, the Middle East and Southeast Asia, was tasked with revitalising the women's national side and overseeing a generational transition.
