Mastercard is growing its crypto team again. The card network keeps adding people, products and partners to its digital asset operation.
What Mastercard has been building
On July 1, 2025, Mastercard announced two new Vice President roles inside its crypto team. One focused on partnerships across the digital assets ecosystem. The other focused on helping financial institutions adopt blockchain technology.
Those hires sit under Raj Dhamodharan, who now serves as EVP of Blockchain and Digital Assets. His mandate is to connect traditional finance with blockchain rather than build a separate, parallel system.
In March 2026, the company launched a global Crypto Partner Program. It brought in more than 85 firms, including Binance and Ripple.
In August 2026, Mastercard agreed to acquire BVNK, a stablecoin infrastructure provider, for up to $1.8 billion.
On October 15, 2026, Mastercard launched its Global Money Platform. The product lets businesses handle both traditional currency and stablecoin transactions through a single API. The platform is projected to expand to more than 40 currencies and connect with more than 17 billion endpoints.
Where Bitcoin fits, and where it doesn’t
Mastercard’s recent moves show no specific focus on Bitcoin or other major cryptocurrencies. The emphasis has been on enterprise blockchain use cases and payments interoperability.
The company’s work builds on USDC, a widely used dollar-pegged stablecoin. Mastercard is also exploring support for multiple currencies in 2027.
The target use cases reflect that. Mastercard’s initiatives aim to support cross-border transactions and tokenized asset services.
What this means
The clearest beneficiaries are stablecoin issuers and the firms that build around them. Mastercard’s reliance on USDC and its BVNK purchase suggest that dollar-pegged tokens are becoming a core part of mainstream payments architecture.
With more than 85 firms involved in the partner program, including major names like Binance and Ripple, Mastercard is positioning itself as a hub that crypto companies want to connect to.
The Global Money Platform’s projected expansion to more than 40 currencies and more than 17 billion endpoints is a forecast, not a finished result. The planned exploration of multi-currency stablecoin support in 2027 is another milestone to track.
Regulation remains a key variable. Mastercard’s emphasis on working within existing financial frameworks, rather than around them, shapes its overall approach to compliance and interoperability.
