- Kiana, a former corporate tech consultant from New York, relocated to a beachfront studio in Nyali, Mombasa, after a near-fatal car accident changed her outlook on life
- She funds her coastal lifestyle through product consulting, a diaspora membership community called Afroad Adventurer, and brand partnerships across her 20,000 social media followers
- Beyond affordable living, Kiana is developing a video game aimed at connecting diaspora youth with African history and work-ready skills
Kiana, an American tech professional originally from New York, is building a new life from a beachfront studio apartment in Nyali, Mombasa, paying roughly KSh 97,365 a month in rent after a devastating car accident reshaped everything she thought she wanted.

The accident left her unable to walk, and her recovery was so unusual that medical professionals began studying her case. Rather than return to the corporate grind she had always known, she took the experience as a signal to rebuild deliberately.
Why did Kiana move to Kenya?
"I came here to build. I didn't just come here to escape anything," she said. "I wanted to learn about Africa all I could, as I'm building an organisation that was African-oriented, and what better place than to come here on the continent rather than just reading about it."

Kiana's path to Kenya was anything but planned. She had been visiting a friend in the Middle East when regional conflict forced her to find the earliest available flight out.
That turned out to be a route to Ethiopia, where she stayed until her visa expired. Kenya was next, drawn partly by an AI conference called GetX and partly by long-held curiosity about the country.
What is Kiana's monthly expense?
She had not anticipated ending up on the coast. Nyali, she says, found her rather than the other way around.
Her studio, larger than most New York equivalents, comes with a pool, gym, restaurant and a balcony overlooking the Indian Ocean, where she wakes to the sight of monkeys and tropical birds each morning.
Her monthly expenses beyond rent include roughly KSh 13,000 to KSh 19,000 on groceries, KSh 19,000 to KSh 26,000 on eating out, about KSh 10,000 on ride-hailing between Mombasa and Nairobi, and a KSh 12,000 electricity bill driven largely by working indoors with air conditioning.
How many social media followers does Kiana have?
Funding this lifestyle involves several income streams. Her background as a technical product consultant for Fortune 500 companies, government agencies and banks remains her primary source of earnings.
She also runs Afroad Adventurer, a membership community she grew from zero to over 1,500 members, focused not on leisure travel but on helping diaspora professionals access remote job listings, referrals and tech conference networks.
Brand partnerships across her combined following of more than 20,000 on LinkedIn and other platforms add a further stream.
Kiana's latest ambitious project
Her most ambitious project is a video game, Afroadventure Worlds, designed to teach diaspora youth about African history and culture while building skills that make them employable by global tech companies.
"We didn't learn about our history," she said. "There's such a disconnect between the diaspora and knowing our true roots and our culture."
Kenya's blend of coastline, safari country, a booming tech ecosystem and a city she describes as an African version of New York has given her, she says, a sense of wholeness she had not found elsewhere across the more than 45 countries she has visited.
