Tributes have been streaming in for open-water swimmer and musician, Janine Lochrenberg, who was killed following a shark attack on Tuesday morning.
The incident took place at Orient Beach in KuGompo City (formerly East London) at around 7am.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa said police were summoned to the scene.
"On their arrival they discovered the body of a 65-year-old woman with open wounds."
Police said a case of inquest has been opened at KuGompo SAPS for further investigation.
The attack occurred while the victim was swimming with a group of open-water swimmers.
She sustained severe injuries to her right arm and leg.
Following the tragedy the East London open-water swimming community paid tribute to Lochrenberg, a retired medical professional.
“It is with immense sadness and heavy hearts that we share the tragic passing of our fellow open water swimmer and dear friend, Janine Lochrenberg, who lost her life in a fatal shark attack this morning,” the swimming community said.
Lochrenberg remembered by swimming community
The community described Lochrenberg as a quiet and dedicated swimmer who preferred to stay out of the spotlight while pursuing her passion for the ocean.
“She was never one to seek the spotlight, preferring to quietly go about doing what she loved most — swimming in the ocean.”
Despite her reserved nature, Lochrenberg was described as someone who made a meaningful contribution to the local swimming community and was always willing to support fellow swimmers.
“But behind her gentle, unassuming nature was someone who contributed so much to our swimming community, always there, always willing, and very much a part of the heart of our group,” the community added.
Ocean was her happy place
The community said the ocean was central to Lochrenberg’s life, providing a space where she found happiness and shared memorable experiences with other swimmers.
“The ocean was Janine’s happy place. It was where she found her joy, and where so many of us were fortunate enough to share special moments with her,” the community said.
“We will remember her beautiful smile, her gentle kindness, and the quiet but meaningful presence she brought to our swimming family.”
Viva Musica Ensemble pays tribute to gifted viola player
The Viva Musica Ensemble also paid tribute to Lochrenberg, confirming that she had been part of the musical group since its inception.
The ensemble described her as a highly gifted musician whose viola playing had made a valuable contribution to the group.
“Janine was a member of the Viva Musica Ensemble since its very inception. As a highly gifted musician, her contribution on the viola brought great value to our ensemble.”
The ensemble said that although Lochrenberg was quiet and unassuming, she challenged fellow musicians to improve their performances and maintain high standards.
“We extend our deepest condolences to Janine's partner, family and friends. Rest peacefully, Janine,” it said.
Condolences extended to partner and family
The community also extended its condolences to Lochrenberg’s family, particularly her partner, Barbara, as they come to terms with the loss.
“Our hearts go out to Janine’s family, and especially to her beloved partner, Barbara, during this unimaginable time. There are simply no words,” the swimming community said.
The group thanked members of the wider ocean community for their messages of support and condolences following the tragedy.
“Rest peacefully, Janine. You will be so very missed, and you will always be part of our ocean family.”
