Pakistan resumed LNG regasification at Engro’s terminal after the arrival of the Qatari vessel Al-Areesh, enabling 150 mmcfd of RLNG to enter the national gas network.
According to media reports, the shipment was Pakistan’s first LNG delivery in October, as authorities struggle to secure additional cargoes amid disruptions and uncertainty over maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
Pakistan is seeking three LNG cargoes from Qatar but is currently expected to receive only two this month. Engro’s terminal had remained shut since September 26 due to a lack of shipments, while the second terminal, operated by Pakistan GasPort Limited (PGPL), has been non-operational since October 9 because of insufficient LNG stocks. Authorities expect another cargo for PGPL within eight to 10 days.
The supply shortage has affected electricity generation, with the power sector receiving only around 38 mmcfd of gas on October 13 before Engro resumed operations.
Pakistan’s LNG outlook remains uncertain following QatarEnergy’s extension of its force majeure declaration until November 6 after an attack on its Ras Laffan facility in March.
Further disruption could intensify energy shortages during winter, when demand from Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited is projected to rise to 1,550 mmcfd from 500 mmcfd, while Sui Southern Gas Company’s demand is expected to increase to 500 mmcfd from 300 mmcfd.
Domestic production problems, pipeline damage and suspended supplies to power plants are adding to the pressure on the gas network, raising concerns over the country’s ability to meet winter energy requirements.
