Microsoft recently announced massive structural changes across its gaming division that directly threaten Marvel’s Blade developer Arkane Lyon. On July 6, Xbox revealed strict plans to lay off 3,200 employees before the end of the fiscal year. These aggressive cuts targeted five acquired studios for immediate closure or divestiture. Consequently, the affected list includes Ninja Theory, Compulsion Games, Double Fine, Undead Labs, and Arkane Lyon.
However, Arkane Lyon currently survives due to France’s Florange Law. This specific legislation requires large companies to actively seek a buyer before executing mass layoffs or closing a subsidiary. Consequently, the studio entered urgent talks with the French government to find a financial lifeline.
Marvel’s Blade Could Be Cancelled IF Arkane Lyon Misses Deadline
A new report from a French publication sheds light on this dire situation. A union representative, speaking under a pseudonym, confirmed that the official consultation period for Arkane Lyon ends on November 13. If Microsoft cannot secure a buyer by this fast-approaching deadline, 217 employees could lose their jobs. Furthermore, the beloved studio would face complete closure.
This tragic outcome would likely trigger the immediate cancelation of Marvel’s Blade. Ironically, the union representative noted that the superhero game is actively “nearing the end” of its production. The French game workers union (Syndicat des Travailleureuses du Jeu Video) remains immensely proud of the completed work. In fact, the representative claimed that canceling the title now would be a “monumental waste”, firmly believing the game would achieve massive success upon launch.
Seeking a Financial Partner
Currently, Arkane has not issued an official public statement regarding its ongoing search for a buyer. Nevertheless, Microsoft provided the French publication with a direct comment. The tech giant stated it is actively seeking a partner to support the next development phase and ensure the commercialization of the Marvel’s Blade project.
This situation feels especially grim given the recent praise for the development team. Just two weeks before the July divestiture announcement, Bethesda Executive Producer Todd Howard shared a highly positive update. During a recent interview, Howard explicitly stated that the Arkane Lyon developers were doing a “really, really great job”. This high-level endorsement clearly suggests Marvel’s Blade is shaping up exceptionally well. Therefore, failing to find a partner by November 13 would only add severe insult to injury for the hardworking developers.
