The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has pledged to renovate facilities and provide solar streetlights at his former school, Government Secondary School, Makarfi, Kaduna state, as he marks 50 years since enrolling at the institution.
Abbas made the pledge during a visit to the school, where he reflected on his years as a student and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the institution that contributed to his educational journey.
The Speaker enrolled at the school in October 1976, making October 2026 exactly 50 years since he began his secondary education there.
He was accompanied on the visit by the Secretary to the Kaduna state government, Dr AbdulKadir Mu’azu Meyere, who commended him for returning to his alma mater and pledging support for its development.
Meyere also spoke about plans to renovate the school and donate a bus to the institution, in a move aimed at improving its facilities and supporting teaching and learning.
The visit formed part of activities surrounding the inspection, groundbreaking and commissioning of projects in Makarfi and Kudan local government areas of Kaduna state.
Beyond the intervention at his former school, Abbas also participated in the groundbreaking for male and female hostels at Shehu Idris College of Health Sciences and Technology, Makarfi.
The hostel project is expected to address accommodation needs at the institution, which admitted more than 1,000 students during the 2024/2025 academic session.
Other projects inspected or inaugurated during the exercise included the Makarfi bypass linking Anguwan Gari to Anguwan Hudu, a 20-bed primary healthcare centre and a block of 10 classrooms, offices and toilets, with furniture, at LGEA Primary School, Tashar Yari, Makarfi.
The bypass is expected to improve connectivity between communities, reduce travel time and transportation costs, and ease the movement of agricultural produce. The healthcare centre and classroom project are also expected to strengthen access to basic health services and improve the learning environment for pupils.
During the exercise, Abbas urged residents to protect public facilities and monitor contractors to ensure that projects were executed to the required standards.
Meyere commended the Speaker’s interventions and said cooperation between the federal and state governments was important to delivering development projects to communities.
The visit to Government Secondary School, Makarfi, however, provided a personal dimension to the wider project tour, as Abbas returned to the institution five decades after beginning his secondary education there.
