- Bongi Mbonambi is reportedly facing disciplinary action at the Sharks over alleged misconduct during a pre-season team-building session
- The Springbok star has reportedly been excluded from training and matchday squads despite being fit to play
- Mbonambi could face serious consequences, including a possible contract termination, while his Springbok prospects remain uncertain
Springbok veteran Bongi Mbonambi is reportedly facing an uncertain future at the Sharks following an alleged breach of team protocols during a pre-season team-building session.
According to a report by Rapport, the experienced rugby player is under investigation for alleged misconduct, with the Sharks reportedly considering disciplinary action that could affect his future at the Durban-based franchise.
Mbonambi's absence from training and matchday squads has raised further questions about his position in the team, despite reports indicating that he is fit to play.
The situation could also affect his chances of returning to the Springbok setup ahead of the November Test window.
The alleged incident reportedly took place during a team-building exercise at Bayala Private Safari Lodges.
According to Rapport, Mbonambi and other players allegedly continued socialising into the early hours despite instructions to follow team protocols.
Sharks coach JP Pietersen had reportedly addressed the players about their plans for Tuesday evening, allowing them to socialise before returning their focus to training.
However, Mbonambi was allegedly present at the meeting where the expectations were communicated, placing him under greater scrutiny as a senior player.
Another experienced Springbok, Trevor Nyakane, was also reportedly involved in a breach of team protocols. However, reports suggest that his circumstances may differ because he was not present when Pietersen addressed the players.
Bongi Mbonambi's Springbok chances in doubt
The disciplinary matter has reportedly raised the possibility that the Sharks could terminate Mbonambi's contract if he is found guilty of the alleged misconduct.
The franchise's final decision will determine whether the Springbok veteran can return to the squad or faces a more significant setback in his domestic career. Mbonambi has also dealt with injuries over the past year, and the latest developments could complicate his efforts to return to the Springboks ahead of the November international fixtures.
Pietersen has reportedly declined to comment on questions about the player's absence, leaving uncertainty surrounding the situation.
The Sharks' final disciplinary ruling is expected to clarify Mbonambi's position at the franchise. Until then, his immediate playing future and international prospects remain uncertain.
