Four years ago, Ken Sim and his centre-right ABC Vancouver party swept to power in the 2022 civic election, securing a supermajority on Vancouver City Council.
Tonight, that majority was wiped out. Sim was defeated by Green Party of Vancouver mayoral candidate and sitting city councillor Pete Fry, while Mike Klassen was the only ABC city councillor re-elected.
Left-wing and progressive candidates won nine of the 10 councillor seats. Including Fry’s mayoral seat, they will hold 10 of the 11 seats on City Council.
The new City Council will consist of four COPE city councillors, four Green city councillors, one OneCity city councillor, and one ABC city councillor, alongside the Green mayor.

According to the City of Vancouver’s preliminary account, with 148 of the 149 voting places reporting as of 12:30 a.m. Sunday, COPE’s Sean Orr has been re-elected with the most number of votes among all city councillor candidates, winning 75,305 votes.
This is followed by Green’s Annette Reilly with 71,794 votes, COPE’s Chloe Leslie with 61,731 votes, COPE’s Devyani Singh with 59,371 votes, Green’s Stephanie Smith with 58,461 votes, Green’s Camil Dumont with 57,143 votes, OneCity’s Lucy Maloney with 56,593 votes, COPE’s Solomon Yi-Kieran with 54,811 votes, ABC’s Mike Klassen with 53,665 votes, and Green’s Bridget Burns with 53,032 votes.
Dumont was previously a Park Board commissioner with the Greens from 2018 to 2022, while Orr and Maloney are incumbents, first elected into office in the City Council by-election in April 2025.
Finishing just behind Burns, who secured the final City Council seat, were ABC’s Joyce Gillespie with 51,273 votes, Peter Meiszner with 50,549 votes, Lisa Dominato with 50,422 votes, and Sarah Kirby-Yung with 50,244 votes.
Overall, just three incumbents were re-elected to City Council.
These figures are preliminary and still subject to some change, with results from a single voting place still outstanding at the time of writing. Final civic election results will be released on Wednesday, Oct. 21, along with the results of the non-binding public safety plebiscite, which will be scanned and counted after election night.
After this election, the outgoing ABC-led City Council still has one remaining scheduled public meeting on Oct. 27. The inauguration of the new City Council is scheduled for Nov. 2.
Similarly, the newly elected Park Board consists entirely of Green and COPE commissioners, while the new School Board is made up entirely of COPE, Green, and OneCity trustees, giving left-wing/progressive parties full control of both bodies.
Vancouver appears to be one of the few outliers in tonight’s B.C. civic elections, with voters in many other major and notable jurisdictions shifting away from left-wing/progressive candidates in favour of centrist, centre-right, and right-wing contenders.
