With help from Urban Meyer, Florida footballselected Jon Sumrall as its head coach. Sumrall has experienced both success and setbacks during his first season in Gainesville, yet Meyer believes the Gators coach has the potential to lead the program back to the summit of college football.
On Don’t @ Me with Dan Dakich, Meyer expressed his admiration for Sumrall and explained how he became convinced that Florida had found the right person to lead its football program.
“Digging him big-time,” Meyer said. “No, no, I don’t like him. I love the guy. I never met him until this year, I was involved in the coaching search, they asked me to kind of vet. And one phone call, I hung up the phone and I called a couple, a guy on the Board of Trustees and I said, ‘You found your guy, man.’”

Under Sumrall, Florida got off to an impressive 4-0 start in the 2026 college football season. However, the Gators’ strong opening eventually hit a rough patch as the team suffered consecutive defeats against Missouri and South Carolina.
The setbacks threatened to derail the momentum Sumrall had established early in his tenure, but Florida responded with a 27-24 upset victory over Texas.
Meyer also praised Sumrall’s straightforward approach and gave a nod to the coach’s determination to keep making progress despite the team’s struggles.
“I love when he says, ‘yeah, we suck, we just suck less today and we beat Texas.’ I mean how cool is that?”
The Gators have now improved to a 5-2 overall record and a 3-2 mark in the Southeastern Conference following their victory over Texas. The result provided a much-needed boost after the consecutive losses.
However, the victory did not erase the concerns raised by the losses to Missouri and South Carolina. Florida will need to deliver more consistent performances on both sides of the ball if it hopes to remain competitive in the SEC race.
