Following a comfortable win at home to Getafe to maintain their perfect record in La Liga at the weekend, Barcelona have made the trip to Istanbul for their second Champions League league phase clash as they face Turkish leaders Galatasaray at RAMS Park on Tuesday night.
This is the first of three massive away games in a row for the Catalans, who play Real Betis in the league at the weekend and Paris Saint-Germain in the French capital next week, a stretch of crucial matches that will test Hansi Flick’s squad to the limit and set the mood ahead of the first El Clásico of the season.
Barça will face undoubtedly the toughest away environment of the season so far, and it is no exaggeration to say RAMS Park features one of the most hostile and intimidating atmospheres in the world. Galatasaray fans are very close to the pitch, make an incredible amount of noise, and will whistle Barça’s players when in possession for the entire 90 minutes.
The players feed off the energy of the crowd and the first 20 minutes of Galatasaray matches tend to be brutal for whatever opponent they face. They also have a whole lot of attacking talent with plenty of experience in big European games, and the expected front three of Leroy Sané, Rafael Leão and Victor Osimhen is a scary blend of pace, power and skill that can create real trouble for the Barça defense.
Flick’s side have done an excellent job of controlling matches so far this season, and they will need to be at their very best in that department to keep the ball, slow down the home team’s momentum early on, and slowly but surely establish their superiority.
Rodri’s arrival in the summer brought the exact type of midfield player Barça need for games like this, and he is one of the key individuals who will help decide the outcome of the game. The absence of captain Raphinha will be felt, but the Barça attack is talented, fluid and dangerous enough to cope without their top scorer in this one.
But make no mistake: Barça will win this game with their defense and midfield. If Pau Cubarsí can neutralize Osimhen’s threat and the Blaugrana full-backs do a good job against Galatasaray’s dangerous wingers while Rodri and Pedri pull the strings and set the tempo in the middle, Barça will be in good shape.
If the visitors can’t control the chaos, however, this could be a long night. Barça did a great job of controlling the chaos four years ago when they faced Galatasaray in the Europa League, winning 2-1 thanks in large part to a strong defensive display, a dominant midfield performance, and an iconic goal from Pedri.
A repeat of that type of performance in March 2022 with today’s group of players is the key to the win, and if Barça can play an impressive game at one of the craziest and toughest grounds on Earth, they will make quite the statement.
Let’s dance.

PREDICTION
Galatasaray have really talented attacking players with European experience, and the atmosphere is genuinely terrifying. But I trust this Barça team and this Barça coach more than any in recent times, and I believe they’ll make a statement about their ability to compete and thrive in the toughest environments in Europe: 3-1 Barça.
