A local community group in the western city of Cacak said that some 300 people handed back their membership cards to the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) over the past few months.
Wake Up Cacak group spokeswoman Vesna Jerotic told Nova TV that the ruling SNS planned to destroy the membership cards but that one of its members handed them to her group. She said the departure of that many local members could be why the SNS is having a hard time nominating its members to polling station boards.
The alleged loss of members come amid growing public attention to allegations of pressure on citizens over party membership and employment, as well as the circulation of a list containing personal data of around 1,600 Cacak residents, some categorized by their presumed political affiliations.
