The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has proposed road repairs and renovation of stormwater drains at the Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex, at an estimated cost of ₹8.34 crore, as it steps up measures to address waterlogging and clogged drains.
A CMDA official said water stagnation on the main roads had reduced after a drain was constructed. However, clogging persisted near the L and M blocks and inside the flower market, where old drains required cleaning.
High-pressure jet-rodding machines would be deployed to clear clogged drains in the internal market areas, where manual cleaning would be difficult. The CMDA would procure the machines from the Chennai Metrowater and the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC).
Some locations require new drains, which would be constructed after the monsoon.
Motor pumps had already been deployed to remove stagnant water. The CMDA had also sought the GCC’s help in placing pumps in waterlogged areas and asked the Chennai Metro Rail Limited to install high-powered suction pumps at locations affected by its ongoing works, the official said.
Unsold vegetables
The CMDA also plans to work with the GCC to collect or purchase unsold vegetables from vendors for use in Amma Canteens, and breakfast and midday meal kitchens, the official said.
A new contractor has taken over solid waste management at the market. The official said the CMDA would closely monitor open dumping of waste along pathways and in areas where it could clog drains, and impose heavy fines on those responsible.
Scope of the project
The ₹8.34-crore project includes relaying the cement concrete road between Gates 7 and 14, repairing roads, and renovating stormwater drains in the vegetable market’s truck bays.
The work is scheduled to be completed within six months of the site being handed over.
The 67-acre complex houses vegetable, fruit, and flower markets. The project was announced by the State government during the 2026-27 Budget session.
Separately, the CMDA has proposed road upgrades at the Iron and Steel Market in Sathangadu at an estimated cost of ₹8.21 crore.
