KUALA LUMPUR: Taobao is expanding its Malaysia push with AI-powered shopping tools, better local return services and a stronger focus on product quality as it seeks to attract consumers looking beyond low prices for distinctive finds.
The Chinese e-commerce platform is combining AI-driven product discovery with human curation and more local services to make cross-border shopping more convenient for Malaysian consumers.
Taobao Malaysia country head Jess Lew said the company was responding to changing consumer preferences, with shoppers increasingly seeking products that reflect their interests, lifestyles and aspirations.
"Our goal is not only to bring Malaysians access to Everything and Anything, but also to make the experience of discovering and purchasing these products as seamless as possible," she said.
Taobao said Malaysia remained a strategically important market, supported by growing digital commerce activity and demand for products that may be difficult to find locally.
According to the Statistics Department, online retail trade growth for Malaysia accelerated to nine per cent year-on-year in June, alongside research indicating that consumers were increasingly willing to pay more for better-quality products and services.
Taobao said its cross-border catalogue contained more than three billion products, while its new Taobao Curated Supply System had identified more than 4,000 original-brand stores and six million curated products.
The system combines AI and human expertise to assess products based on quality, distinctiveness, price competitiveness and service, helping consumers discover items beyond their usual searches.
AI, LOCALISATION TO DRIVE SHOPPING UPGRADES
A key part of Taobao's strategy is the integration of AI tools to simplify product discovery and help consumers make more informed purchasing decisions.
Taobao Malaysia is introducing four shopping features: AI Try-On, AI Shopping Assistant, AI Product Insights and Voice-Search-by-Hold.
The tools allow users to visualise fashion items on their own photos, receive personalised recommendations, compare product information and summarise customer reviews, or search for items by describing what they need.
The company also said it was strengthening product screening by checking merchants' legal compliance, incorporating consumer feedback and using AI to assess product information including sourcing, quality and copyright.
Products that receive poor consumer feedback may be given lower priority in recommendations.
Lew said Taobao had invested in localising the shopping experience through language support, payment partnerships, logistics improvements and customer service.
These efforts include English and Bahasa Malaysia interfaces, aimed at making the platform more accessible to local consumers.
The latest upgrades are being promoted through Taobao Malaysia's 11.11 Global Shopping Festival, which runs from Oct 20 at 8pm to Nov 13.
The campaign offers free shipping on fashion items without a minimum spending requirement, alongside platform discounts, selected bank rebates and shipping incentives.
The company is also expanding its local after-sales support through a partnership with J&T Express, which will progressively introduce more than 1,400 local return drop-off points nationwide from November.
The network is intended to allow consumers to return eligible purchases locally without having to ship items back to China, addressing a common concern associated with cross-border online shopping.
Taobao Official Logistics also offers parcel tracking, support for delivery issues and compensation for eligible lost or damaged shipments, although the availability of individual services may vary.
The company said the expansion would complement its existing logistics services and give consumers greater confidence when shopping across borders.
MORE MALAYSIAN BRANDS IN CHINA
Beyond bringing Chinese products to Malaysia, Taobao's wider Alibaba ecosystem is exploring opportunities to help Malaysian brands reach consumers in China through Tmall Global.
The company said it had previously supported Malaysian products, including Old Town White Coffee, notable bird's nest brands as well as durian products and footwear, in entering the Chinese market.
It is now exploring ways to bring more Malaysian brands onto Tmall Global in the near future.
The potential expansion could provide local businesses with another route to reach Chinese consumers, alongside Taobao's efforts to widen product access for Malaysian shoppers.
BUILDING CONSUMER CONFIDENCE
Beyond product discovery and promotions, Taobao's expansion of local services highlights the importance of consumer confidence in cross-border e-commerce.
While access to a wider range of products may attract shoppers, delivery costs, return procedures and concerns over product quality can influence whether they make repeat purchases.
Taobao said eligible orders in key Malaysian cities could be upgraded to air shipping, with delivery in as fast as five days. The company is also offering shipping vouchers and other incentives during the campaign.
Its focus on original-brand stores and curated products is intended to help consumers identify distinctive goods, while AI tools aim to simplify comparisons across an extensive selection.
However, the effectiveness of these initiatives will depend on how consistently the platform delivers on its promises, particularly in logistics and after-sales support.
Localising the platform for Malaysia's multicultural market remains a challenge, particularly as products and marketing strategies that resonate with Chinese consumers may not have the same appeal among Malaysian shoppers.
Taobao said it has been experimenting with different campaigns, translations and content creator partnerships to better communicate its products and services to local audiences.
The challenge lies in adapting the shopping experience across different languages, cultural preferences and consumer expectations, while ensuring that product information is clear and relevant.
Building trust in product quality and ensuring reliable cross-border delivery will also be crucial in encouraging first-time users to make repeat purchases.
