The dreamy Seattle rockers Spiral XP will release their new EP Blue Earth on Friday, and its title track was one of our favorites on the week that it came out. Today, the band shares the blearily pretty new song "Faith Electric," which stands as another reason to pay attention. Over a huge bass-and-drums groove, the band layers organ sustain, sheets of guitar noise, and echoed-out ba-ba-ba harmonies, giving me flashbacks to late-'90s Yo La Tengo. Here's what the band says about it:
Although this song sticks with the same beat and riff pretty much the whole way through, it is also a song that is distinctly divided in two. The first half features Max’s vocals vaguely evoking cult worship and blind faith, while the second half has Lena bringing us to a more ethereal place of dreams and half sleep. The juxtaposition of Max’s harsher and fiercer vocal delivery with Lena’s warm and lush singing is in line with the inspiration for the song, which was intended to be a combination of the grungy noise rock of Th’ Faith Healers with the dreamy trip-hop of Bowery Electric.
