Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has charged members of the 2026 Batch C Stream I of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) combined Delta and Lagos to uphold discipline, integrity and patriotism as they begin their one-year national service.
Oborevwori gave the charge on Tuesday at the closing ceremony of the three-week orientation course held at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Issele-Uku, Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State.
The governor, represented by the Commissioner for Youth Development, Hon. Barr. Brave Enodeh, urged the corps members to discharge their duties diligently, respect their host communities and contribute meaningfully to national development.
He described national service as an opportunity for young graduates to contribute to the country’s development while acquiring valuable experience and skills for their future.
Oborevwori encouraged the corps members to promote unity and mutual respect, noting that Nigeria’s diversity remained a source of strength. He also advised them to prioritise their security, obey the law and seek guidance from NYSC officials whenever they encountered challenges.
Welcoming them to Delta State, the governor urged the corps members to respect the customs and traditions of their host communities, build cordial relationships and identify opportunities to make positive contributions to local development.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to the welfare and security of corps members through its MORE Agenda and continued support for the NYSC programme.
The governor commended the NYSC management, camp officials, security agencies, medical personnel and other stakeholders for their contributions to the successful conduct of the orientation course before declaring the exercise officially closed.
Earlier, the NYSC State Coordinator in Delta, Mr. John Yandit Kwaghe, said the orientation course had achieved its objectives despite the challenges associated with organising an exercise of such magnitude.
Kwaghe attributed the peaceful conduct of the programme to the cooperation of stakeholders and the exemplary behaviour of the corps members.
He urged them to sustain the discipline and sense of responsibility demonstrated during the orientation exercise, adding that activities such as drills, sporting competitions and lectures had promoted teamwork, physical fitness and unity.
The coordinator also encouraged the corps members to build on the skills acquired through the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme by participating in post-camp training to improve their prospects for self-reliance and wealth creation.
He further urged them to take the Community Development Service (CDS) programme seriously by identifying the needs of their host communities and working with community leaders to implement projects that would improve lives.
Kwaghe expressed appreciation to the Delta State Government for its continued support for the scheme, particularly the re-roofing and renovation of the camp’s multipurpose hall, which he said had improved the conduct of lectures and other indoor activities.
He appealed for the renovation of some hostel facilities to accommodate the increasing number of corps members posted to the state.
The coordinator also thanked traditional rulers, community leaders, corporate partners and other stakeholders for their support, while wishing the corps members safe journeys to their respective places of primary assignment.
