Kazakhstan Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov has discussed the implementation of joint energy and telecommunications projects with Moutaz Al-Khayyat and Ramez Al-Khayyat, leaders of Qatar’s Power International Holding (PIH), as the country advances plans to expand gas processing and transportation infrastructure.
According to Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Energy, PIH is involved in several energy projects, including the construction of two gas processing plants at the Kashagan field with annual capacities of 1bn and 2.5bn cubic metres of gas.
Construction and installation work is underway at the smaller plant, with delivery of the main equipment virtually complete. The facility is scheduled to be commissioned in 2027.
Preparations are underway for the main implementation phase of the second plant, with an annual capacity of 2.5bn cubic metres. The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor has been selected, and the project is scheduled for completion in 2030.
The parties also reviewed progress on the second line of the Beineu–Bozoy–Shymkent trunk gas pipeline, which is intended to develop Kazakhstan’s gas transportation infrastructure. Design work and the delivery of equipment and materials are ongoing. The first stage is scheduled for completion in 2027, followed by the second stage in 2029.
Cooperation in telecommunications and opportunities for further collaboration in the sector were also discussed.
Bektenov called for intensified efforts across all projects to ensure facilities are commissioned on schedule. The Kazakh government is providing support to resolve emerging issues, according to the ministry.
The PIH leaders reaffirmed their interest in mutually beneficial cooperation and pledged to take the necessary steps to fulfil the agreements reached.
