Toluwanisings’ death puts celebrities’ health, Nigeria’s healthcare crisis under scrutiny

The death of gospel singer Olayemi Bayonile Bolaji, popularly known as Toluwanisings, has renewed concerns about health awareness among entertainers and the ability of Nigeria’s healthcare system to provide timely emergency medical attention.

The 41-year-old singer reportedly slumped at his residence in Ibadan, Oyo State, and died on Wednesday, October 14. His death has sparked grief across the gospel music industry, while accounts of how his relatives tried to seek medical assistance for him have raised questions about access to emergency care.

According to his personal assistant, Babadunni Gbolabo, efforts to save the singer took them to eight hospitals, where they allegedly encountered difficulties obtaining medical support. The circumstances surrounding his final hours require further investigation, while the cause of death has not been publicly established.

Reacting to the incident, gospel singer, Frank Edward, called for urgent attention to Nigeria’s health care system, lamenting that Nigerians continued to lose their lives to medical conditions that timely intervention could potentially address.

His reaction has amplified calls for a more responsive healthcare system capable of delivering prompt and effective treatment when lives are at risk.

Toluwanisings’ death has disrupted activities within the gospel music community, with organisers postponing or cancelling programmes at which he was scheduled to perform.

For instance, Kaywonder had postponed the seventh edition of the Invasion Praise Concert, scheduled for Sunday, October 18, at Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos. Toluwanisings was among the artistes billed for the event.

Pure Gospel Music Generals Akure (PUGMUG) cancelled its 10th anniversary celebration, scheduled for October 16, while AY Grace Music Ministry postponed its October edition of the All Sufficient Monthly Praise programme. The organisers said new dates for the postponed events would be communicated.

Beyond the immediate grief, the tragedy has also prompted renewed reflection on health consciousness among gospel ministers and other entertainers, whose demanding schedules often involve frequent travel, late-night performances and consecutive engagements.

Although there is no established evidence linking Toluwanisings’ work routine to his death, his passing highlights the importance of regular medical check-ups, adequate rest and prompt attention to unusual symptoms. Spiritual commitment and professional dedication should not come at the expense of personal health.

Churches, gospel music associations and event organisers can also contribute by promoting health awareness, providing first-aid support at major events and establishing clear emergency response procedures.

The reported difficulties encountered while seeking medical assistance have also drawn attention to longstanding concerns about hospital capacity, staffing shortages, emergency referral systems and the cost of healthcare. However, the available information does not establish whether a different medical response would have changed the outcome.

The incident has intensified calls for government authorities to strengthen healthcare facilities, improve emergency response, address workforce shortages and expand health insurance coverage to ease the financial burden on patients.

As the gospel music community mourns, Toluwanisings’ death raises questions that extend beyond the entertainment industry: how seriously do performers take their health, and can Nigerians obtain timely medical assistance when emergencies arise?

His passing has left a painful void in gospel music. The priority now is to translate the grief into greater health awareness, more effective emergency care and practical reforms that protect lives.
