A Dhaka court has sentenced Md Mizanur Rahman, also known as Mizan Hossain, to death for strangling his wife to death over dowry demands in South Keraniganj in 2019.
Today (25 October), Judge Munshi Md Moshiar Rahman of the Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 delivered the verdict and fined the accused Tk1 lakh.
Md Ershad Alam (George), a state prosecutor involved in the case, confirmed the verdict.
He said the accused was brought to court from jail for the pronouncement of the verdict and was subsequently sent back to prison under a sentence warrant.
According to the case documents, Mizanur Rahman married the victim, Mosammat Rehana, under Islamic law. The couple had two daughters.
After the marriage, Mizan allegedly received various household items and gold ornaments from Rehana's family as dowry. Her family also built a tin-roofed house at his residence.
Despite these provisions, he allegedly continued to assault his wife over further dowry demands.
About 20 days before the incident, Mizan allegedly demanded Tk50,000 from his wife's family. Rehana's brother, Abbas, later sent Tk2,000 to Mizan's mobile phone through bKash. Despite the payment, Mizan allegedly beat his wife, according to the case documents.
On 25 July 2019, Rehana was strangled to death at a rented house in Char Mirerbagh under South Keraniganj police station before 7am.
After receiving the news, her brother travelled to Dhaka the following day and identified her body at Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital. He subsequently filed a case with South Keraniganj Police Station.
On 29 December 2019, investigating officer Sub-Inspector Md Akkas Mia of South Keraniganj Police Station submitted a charge sheet against Mizanur Rahman after completing the investigation.
The tribunal subsequently framed charges against the accused and ordered the trial to proceed.
Following his arrest, Mizanur Rahman voluntarily made a confessional statement. During the trial, the prosecution presented 10 witnesses before the court.
