By Zoila Palma: The Fisheries Department has reportedly retrieved more than 1,000 feet of illegally deployed gillnet during a night operation near the Temash-Sarstoon area, following reports of illegal fishing activity south of Punta Gorda.
PG TV first reported suspected illegal fishing in the area.
Fisheries officers responded by patrolling the waters and locating the illegal fishing gear.
Gillnets are illegal in Belize, and their use threatens the country’s marine resources.
The community has since expressed appreciation to the Fisheries Department for its quick response.
