Thinking about a postgraduate degree in education? Start here

Think back to the classroom you remember as a student. You may have lugged around heavy backpacks filled with textbooks or copied notes from the whiteboard. Today, the classroom looks rather different.

Generative AI (GenAI) is one of the most prominent changes. What started as something many educators approached cautiously is increasingly being integrated into teaching and learning. The OECD Digital Education Outlook 2026 found that using GenAI with pedagogical intent can improve learning and encourage critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. At the same time, the subjects students learn are evolving; UNESCO recently introduced three guidance tools to help make sustainability a bigger part of classroom learning.

With education changing so quickly, it’s natural to wonder where you fit into the picture. Will you need new skills? Could it be time to take your career in a different direction? Whatever you have in mind, these three global universities offer plenty of possibilities to explore.

The Education University of Hong Kong

The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) was named as a university in 2016, but its story in teacher education stretches back much further — to 1853, when formal in-service teacher training was first introduced in Hong Kong. Today, with over 170+ years of history, that pioneering spirit lives on: EdUHK is the first institution in Hong Kong to be awarded a UNESCO Chair in Education and has educated more than 80% of the city’s kindergarten and primary school teachers, and over 30% of its secondary school teachers.

Its reach now extends internationally as well, ranking #7 in the world and #2 in Asia for education (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026) and #3 globally for education and educational research (US News & World Report Best Global Universities Rankings 2025-26). A key part of this story is the Faculty of Education and Human Development (FEHD), home to EdUHK’s education and psychology programmes, and long recognised as a pioneer of early childhood education in Hong Kong.

Here, you can find many affordable undergraduate and postgraduate programmes (research and taught) in teaching, counselling, psychology, education management, family education, and more. Depending on the programme, students may participate in a range of learning experiences and enrichment opportunities across Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area.

The idea is to give you different ways to understand the issues affecting education today, whether that’s inclusive education, digital transformation, student well-being, educational leadership, or changing workforce needs. And perhaps most importantly, how can the answers you discover here be applied back in your home country?

Your growth here won’t be purely academic either. Studying in Hong Kong means spending time in a multicultural city that connects Asia with the rest of the world. You’ll meet people from different backgrounds and see how they work across different systems. There’s less of a language barrier than you might expect too. Many of FEHD’s undergraduate and taught master’s programmes are delivered in English. Ultimately, an education here is about preparing for what comes next. Whether you return home, continue your studies, or build a career elsewhere, you’ll leave with a broader understanding of education and how it can respond to the needs of different communities.

Columbia University

Before Columbia University’s Teachers College became one of the leading graduate schools of education in the US, its story began with a much smaller school in Greenwich Village. In 1880, philanthropist Grace Dodge created a place where underserved immigrant women could learn practical arts, including sewing and cooking.

But she learnt something else from her work: education worked better when teachers understood their learners — their backgrounds, their circumstances, and what would make a lesson meaningful to them. That idea still echoes through Teachers College today, ranked #6 among the Best Education Schools in the nation.

And there are few places better suited for the college than New York City. From its home in Morningside Heights, adjacent to Harlem, you’ll join a community of thinkers and doers who believe in blending theory with practice in the pursuit of equity and social justice.

With more than 100 master’s and doctoral programmes in education, health, psychology, and leadership, there’s plenty to choose from here. Behind them are world-class scholars investigating some of the biggest questions surrounding how we learn and thrive. Their research stretches from international and music education to teacher preparation and education financing, all working towards a common goal: improving outcomes for students, families, schools, and communities. Join Columbia University’s Teachers College and you can become part of that work through the college’s centres and institutes and research labs.

University College London

Thirteen years at the top is no small feat. University College London’s Institute of Education (IOE) has once again been named the world’s best place to study and research education in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026. Its mission is to improve lives through education, bringing together high-quality research and professional practice to create better opportunities and outcomes for people.

This kind of work draws students from more than 100 countries, including around 2,900 master’s and over 700 doctoral students. They come with different ambitions to pursue a diverse range of programmes. These include Applied Linguistics, Intercultural Communication and TESOL, Digital Media, Education subjects, Education phases, Educational Leadership and Management, Education and International Development, Psychology: Education and Human Development, Social Science and Social Policy, Social Science Research Training, and Special and Inclusive Education.

If research is where your interests lie, there are postgraduate research programmes  available. You’ll be surrounded by more than 300 academics working across education, culture, psychology, and social science. There are also four times as many world-leading scholars in education and related social sciences here as at any other UK university. That expertise has helped produce some impressive research: 94% was judged to be of world-class quality.
