Chelsea have confirmed that goalkeeper Emi Martinez has undergone successful surgery on a fractured jaw sustained during the club’s 2-0 Premier League victory over Everton.
The Argentine goalkeeper was taken to hospital for further assessment after suffering an injury in the second half of Saturday’s encounter at Hill Dickinson Stadium. Medical examinations subsequently confirmed a fractured jaw that required surgical intervention.
In a statement announcing the outcome of the operation, Chelsea said: “Martinez was taken to hospital for further assessment, which confirmed a fractured jaw that required surgery. Blueprint reports
“Everyone at Chelsea wishes Emi a speedy recovery and will support him throughout.”
The successful operation represents an encouraging development following the worrying scenes during the match, although the club has yet to announce an official timetable for the goalkeeper’s return to competitive action.
Collision with Branthwaite sparks concern
Martinez sustained the injury during a second-half aerial challenge involving Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.
The incident occurred when Everton midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall delivered a free-kick into Chelsea’s penalty area. Martinez moved to deal with the delivery but collided with Branthwaite as both players attempted to reach the ball.
The impact left the Chelsea goalkeeper requiring immediate medical attention, with medical personnel attending to him on the pitch for several minutes.
The seriousness of the situation became apparent when Martinez was eventually carried off on a stretcher and taken to hospital for further examinations.
The incident prompted concern among players and supporters, particularly because of the force of the collision and the time required to treat the goalkeeper.
Branthwaite also received treatment following the incident but was able to continue playing.
Subsequent medical examinations confirmed that Martinez had suffered a fractured jaw, making surgery necessary. Chelsea’s latest announcement has now confirmed that the procedure was successful.
Martinez offers reassuring update
Following the operation, Martinez sought to reassure supporters by expressing satisfaction with the outcome of the procedure.
The goalkeeper thanked those who had sent messages of support and indicated that he was hopeful of returning to action after his recovery.
His positive message will provide encouragement to Chelsea supporters, who were concerned after seeing him leave the pitch on a stretcher during the encounter.
However, the successful completion of surgery does not automatically mean an immediate return to football. Martinez will need to recover under medical supervision, with the club’s medical team expected to determine when he can safely resume training and competitive activities.
Chelsea have not officially confirmed a return date, leaving some uncertainty over how many matches the goalkeeper could miss.
The duration of his absence will depend on the nature of the fracture, his response to treatment and the progress he makes during rehabilitation.
Neto’s brace secures victory for Chelsea
Despite the injury setback, Chelsea produced a strong second-half performance to defeat Everton 2-0 and claim all three points.
Portuguese winger Pedro Neto was the decisive figure, scoring both goals to secure an important away victory for manager Xabi Alonso’s side.
Neto opened the scoring just 44 seconds after the restart, giving Chelsea the breakthrough early in the second half after a competitive opening period.
The goal provided the visitors with a valuable advantage and forced Everton to pursue an equaliser.
Chelsea maintained their lead as the contest progressed, showing greater control and defensive discipline to frustrate the hosts.
Neto eventually sealed the victory in the 90th minute, punishing a defensive error to complete his brace and ensure that Chelsea returned home with maximum points.
The result represented an important response for Chelsea as they sought greater consistency in the Premier League. It also offered encouragement to Alonso, whose team demonstrated an ability to manage a difficult away fixture despite the disruption caused by Martinez’s injury.
Chelsea’s defensive performance was particularly significant, as the team secured a clean sheet in a match that ended with an unfortunate injury to its goalkeeper.
Penders steps in for injured goalkeeper
Martinez’s departure created an opportunity for young Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders, who came on to make his Premier League debut.
The 21-year-old was called upon to protect Chelsea’s advantage during a crucial stage of the encounter and helped the visitors preserve their lead until the final whistle.
Penders joined Chelsea from Belgian club Genk in 2024 and has been developing his experience through opportunities away from Stamford Bridge.
His appearance against Everton marked an important milestone in his career and could prove significant as Chelsea consider their goalkeeping options during Martinez’s recovery.
With the Argentine potentially unavailable for forthcoming fixtures, Penders could be among the candidates to deputise, depending on Alonso’s assessment of the squad and the availability of other goalkeepers.
Chelsea will need to maintain their defensive organisation and ensure that whoever is selected can provide the required reliability during a demanding period of the season.
Although Penders’ Premier League debut ended in victory and a clean sheet, the coaching staff will continue to assess the best arrangement for the goalkeeping position while Martinez recovers.
Injury presents challenge for Chelsea
Martinez’s injury comes at a time when Chelsea are seeking to build momentum and establish greater consistency across their domestic campaign.
The availability of a goalkeeper is an important consideration for any club, particularly during a busy period when injuries can disrupt preparations and force changes to established selection plans.
A fractured jaw can present particular challenges for a goalkeeper because the position involves aerial contests, close-range situations and physical contact with opposing players.
Consequently, Chelsea are unlikely to rush Martinez back before he has received the necessary medical clearance.
His absence could increase the responsibility placed on the club’s other goalkeepers, while Alonso and his coaching staff will have to make appropriate adjustments to their preparations for upcoming matches.
The club’s immediate priority, however, will remain Martinez’s welfare and ensuring that he receives the necessary treatment and rehabilitation.
Chelsea await recovery timeline
Although Chelsea have confirmed that the surgery was successful, the club has not provided a definitive timetable for Martinez’s return to training or competitive football.
The goalkeeper’s recovery will depend on medical assessments and how quickly the fractured jaw heals. Any decision on his return will need to take account of his fitness and the risk of aggravating the injury.
The absence of an official timeline means that predictions about the number of matches he could miss remain uncertain.
For now, Chelsea will take encouragement from the successful operation and the goalkeeper’s reassuring response following the procedure.
The club has pledged to support Martinez throughout his recovery, while his teammates will look to maintain their recent progress as the coaching staff evaluates its available options.
Although the injury has overshadowed aspects of Chelsea’s victory over Everton, Neto’s brace ensured that the visitors left Merseyside with all three points.
Chelsea will now hope that Martinez makes a smooth recovery and returns to action as soon as he is medically cleared, with his health and long-term fitness remaining the priority.
