Bangladesh is exploring a deal to import liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from Algeria amid supply disruptions in the Middle East.
Energy Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood held a meeting with Algerian Ambassador to Bangladesh Abdelouahab Saïdani yesterday (11 October) to discuss energy cooperation, including possible memoranda of understanding on LNG and LPG imports, according to a statement from the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources.
The meeting also covered preparations for Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's upcoming visit to Algeria. Energy Secretary Md Ziaul Huq was present.
Algeria, a North African country on the Mediterranean coast, has emerged as an alternative petroleum supplier for South Asian countries amid shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Its shipping routes to South Asia bypass the strait, offering an alternative to traditional Middle Eastern supply routes.
Algerian LNG and LPG exports have traditionally gone mainly to Europe, but recent geopolitical shifts have prompted South Asian countries to diversify their energy sources.
