MWANZA: THE Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Paul Makonda, has ordered the Mwanza Regional Rural Water Agency (RUWASA) to ensure a reliable water supply to residents of Malya Ward in Kwimba District, Mwanza region.
Mr Makonda made the call today while representing President Samia Suluhu Hassan at a public meeting held at the Malya stand grounds, where residents raised concerns over challenges affecting their daily lives.
He said he had received complaints from many residents identifying water shortages as their biggest problem, calling on RUWASA to take immediate measures to address the situation and improve access to the essential service.
As part of efforts to ease the challenge, Makonda allocated 4.5m/- for the purchase of a water pump motor at the Malya water source. The equipment is expected to reduce operational costs and improve the delivery of water to the community.
During the meeting, Mr Makonda also called on citizens to work closely with their leaders in identifying and resolving community challenges while supporting development initiatives across neighbourhoods, villages and wards.
He emphasised that cooperation between residents and public leaders was essential for identifying local priorities, monitoring the implementation of development projects and ensuring that essential services reached the people who needed them.
Mr Makonda highlighted the need for continued collaboration between government institutions, elected representatives and local communities to address persistent infrastructure challenges and ensure that development initiatives deliver tangible benefits to residents.
Speaking about the situation, the RUWASA Mwanza Regional Manager Eng Godfrey Sanga explained that the water source currently relies on diesel fuel to operate its pumping system. This has pushed daily operating expenses to approximately 80,000 shillings, placing a significant financial burden on the service.
The proposed purchase of the motor is expected to help lower these costs and support more efficient water distribution to residents.

He appealed to the Minister to support efforts to accelerate the implementation of development projects and ensure they were completed within the scheduled timeframes. According to Bujaga, timely completion would help reduce the difficulties experienced by residents and improve their living conditions.
Mr Bujaga further stressed that public servants had a responsibility to work collaboratively with citizens to identify practical solutions to problems affecting their communities.
He said such cooperation was vital to accelerating development, improving access to essential services and raising the living standards of people across the constituency.
