The Agricultural Season Protection Committee in Kreinik locality in Sudan’s West Darfur State has reported that no more than 30 percent of cultivated land in the area is expected to yield successful harvests, amid fears that agricultural production could fall below 25 percent of expected output due to poor rainfall.
Prince Ahmed Yagoub Muni, the committee’s chairperson, said the committee had conducted a comprehensive field tour to inspect farming areas, assess the security situation and examine crop conditions. The tour covered Azerni, Mukshasha, Al-Thaniya, Wadi and Kreinik.
“The security situation remained stable, and livestock were kept away from farmland thanks to efforts by members of the Agricultural Season Protection Committee. However, insufficient rainfall has adversely affected large areas of cultivated land, threatening production during the current agricultural season,” he said. “We appeal to local and international communities to support residents of West Darfur amid the difficult conditions, and to ensure food security and the need to assist communities affected by declining agricultural output.”
Separately, Omda Ibrahim Abdel Nabi said the field tour lasted three days and aimed to inspect farms and assess the security situation across the locality.
“Inadequate rainfall has resulted in some farms producing successful crops while others have failed, with projections indicating that output could fall to no more than 25 percent of expected levels,” he stated. “Security remains stable, and community cohesion is holding firm.”
He emphasized the need for continued coordination between local communities and relevant authorities to reduce tensions between farmers and pastoralists.
Meanwhile, Prince Mohammed Abdel Hadi stressed that the state government should prioritize farmers, the protection of crops and the safety of residents.
“The field tour had covered farms across the locality and resulted in the identification of livestock owners whose animals had been found inside some farms,” he said. “I urge livestock owners to keep their herds away from cultivated land until the harvest is complete. Anyone who allows their livestock to enter farms will be held responsible for any resulting damage.”
The warnings come as parts of West Darfur face agricultural challenges linked to inadequate rainfall, raising concerns that declining production could further undermine food security and worsen living conditions for residents.
