Assam: The police in Assam’s Mayong detained a woman on Sunday in connection with the recovery of the charred body of a 25-year-old youth reported missing for over a week. The charred remains of Zahir Islam, who had been missing since October 18, were found in a toilet tank atop the Baha hill near Mayong in Assam’s Morigaon district.
Officials detained a woman named Jesmine on suspicion of being involved in the alleged murder of the youth. The police suspect he was killed brutally and his body was set on fire, with the discovery causing widespread shock in the area.
The deceased, Islam, reportedly hailed from the Khalabhuya area under Mayong Police Station. A father of three, Islam ran a broiler farm for a living. His family grew anxious after he went missing on October 18, and a complaint was later lodged at the police station seeking to trace him. Several days passed before news spread that his body had been recovered from the hill.
The burning of the body has deepened the mystery, and questions are now being raised over why he was killed and why an attempt was apparently made to destroy evidence. Police have not disclosed a motive.
