Did Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith do enough last week to remain on top of the Heisman Trophy power rankings?
Smith had four receptions for 93 yards and two touchdowns in Ohio State's 45-16 win against Maryland. He leads betting odds for the Heisman Trophy, according to BetMGM on Oct 12.
After finishing as a Heisman Trophy finalist last season, quarterback Julian Sayin had another solid performance, finishing with 242 passing yards and a touchdown against the Terrapins. He also had an interception and a fumble.
With plenty of season left, here's where the Ohio State duo ranks in the Heisman Trophy contenders list.
The top 10 Heisman Trophy candidates after Week 6
10. Jesse Legree, Oregon State WR
A PAC-12 player is putting the college football world on notice. Oregon State freshman wide receiver Jesse Legree passed Smith for the FBS lead in receiving yards and touchdowns with his latest three-touchdown performance during a 66-10 win over San Diego State. He may be playing a lesser schedule, but Legree has had at least 100 yards and a touchdown every game he's played.
9. Malachi Toney, Miami WR
One of three non-quarterbacks on the list, Toney was somewhat quiet in Miami's 41-13 win over Clemson on Oct. 3, catching five passes for 40 yards. Toney is eighth in the FBS in receiving yards with five games played.
8. Julian Sayin, Ohio State QB
Sayin had four passing touchdowns against Maryland, but a couple of turnovers keep him from moving any higher in the list.
7. Kamario Taylor, Mississippi State QB
Kamario Taylor threw two interceptions in Mississippi State's 56-23 loss to Alabama. He still threw for 256 yards and three touchdowns and is one of the most exciting young quarterbacks in college football with a formidable deep ball. He'll need to limit turnovers and get some assistance from his defense to go toe-to-toe with LSU.
6. Keelon Russell, Alabama QB
Russell completed 16 of 30 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 70 yards against Georgia's stout defense. He also had a costly fumble off a strip sack on the opening drive that led to a Georgia field goal, which ended up being the difference-maker in the 20-17 Georgia victory.
5. CJ Carr, Notre Dame QB
Carr had 181 passing yards, three touchdowns and 41 rushing yards in a 58-7 win against Stanford. The Fighting Irish have yet to be tested, but Carr can climb the list with strong play against No. 8 BYU this week.
4. Trinidad Chambliss, Ole Miss QB
Chambliss accounted for four touchdowns in a 52-17 blowout against Vanderbilt, but also threw an interception. The Rebels play back-to-back weeks against ranked opponents starting with Missouri this week, providing more chances for Chambliss to boost his resume.
3. Gunner Stockton, Georgia QB
Georgia took down Alabama in Tuscaloosa during the regular season for the first time since 2007. Stockton had an interception, but completed 18 of 22 passes for 249 yards and one touchdown. He also scored a 14-yard rushing touchdown.
2. Darian Mensah, Miami QB
Mensah's position remains unchanged after the bye week. Miami's competition through the first five weeks has been less than stellar, but Mensah has an 84.2% completion rate and leads the ACC in passing touchdowns and yards per attempt. The Duke transfer has a natural connection with Toney and steady play will keep him in the Heisman mix. He'll also go toe-to-toe with Notre Dame and Carr on Nov. 7, which could make or break both quarterbacks' chances to be a Heisman finalist.
1. Jeremiah Smith, Ohio State WR
Smith remains firmly in the lead for the Heisman Trophy. He picked up a pair of touchdowns against Maryland and showed off his yard-after-catch ability to get the Buckeyes an early lead. Smith leads the Big Ten in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.
