IPOH: Well-known preacher Ustaz Wadi Annuar was among five people injured in an accident involving three vehicles on the East-West Highway in Gerik early this morning.
Perak Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad said the accident, which occurred at about 2.40 am, involved a Perodua Myvi, a Toyota Vellfire multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) and a Perodua Bezza.
He said preliminary information received by the department indicated that the Perodua Myvi had skidded into a drain, trapping a 25-year-old male passenger in the front section of the vehicle.
“The 24-year-old male driver of the Myvi was reported to have sustained serious injuries, while another 24-year-old male passenger seated at the back suffered minor injuries. Of the four occupants of the Toyota Vellfire, two were injured while the other two escaped unhurt, while the three occupants of the Perodua Bezza were uninjured.
“The occupants of the Toyota Vellfire were extricated by members of the public before the arrival of the fire and rescue team, while the Myvi driver and two injured victims from the MPV were taken to Gerik Hospital in Health Ministry ambulances,” he said in a statement.
He said the rescue operation was fully completed at 4.39 am, involving 10 personnel from the Gerik Fire and Rescue Station assisted by a Fire Rescue Tender, an Emergency Medical Rescue Services unit and a lorry.
Gerik district police chief Supt Abdul Samad Othman, when contacted by Bernama, confirmed the accident and identified one of those involved as Ustaz Wadi.
Meanwhile, East-West Highway volunteer Mohd Amir Faizal Mohd Zaki told Bernama that Ustaz Wadi sustained injuries to his ribs and had been discharged from hospital.
Mohd Amir Faizal said he rushed to the scene after receiving a call for assistance, as he frequently patrols the Gerik-Jeli route and helps victims of road accidents along the stretch.
“I was told that Ustaz Wadi, who was seated in the back of the vehicle (Vellfire), was travelling from Sungai Petani, Kedah, to Terengganu to attend a programme.
“I managed to meet him at Gerik Hospital, and he was in stable condition,” he said.
