The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has selected Moscow as the host city for its 2030 World Championships, marking the first time an Olympic sport governing body has awarded a flagship world tournament to Russia since the launch of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
The decision was adopted during a meeting of the IWF Executive Board and announced on the federation’s official portal on Sunday, Oct. 25. The determination follows a precedent decision by the international federation to fully restore the right of Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete under their sovereign national flags and anthems in competitions sanctioned under its auspices.

Following the executive vote, IWF General Secretary José Quiñones expressed satisfaction with the bidding process, commending the proposals submitted by applicant member federations.
“All the bids we received were excellent and we are sure that the Championships in your respective countries will be a huge success,” Quiñones said.
“It is also worth noting that three of these four countries will be organising an IWF world event for the first time – Kosovo, Venezuela and India. This demonstrates our Sport is growing worldwide and the staging of our competitions is highly desirable for many nations around the planet.”
Full reinstatement of Russian and Belarusian national symbols
The awarding of the 2030 World Championships follows the complete dismantling of neutrality requirements by the IWF.

Trump Eyes Post-War Business Ties With Both Ukraine and Russia
Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the US will do business with both Ukraine and Russia after the war, amid debates over tariffs and sanctions waivers.
Under previous guidelines enacted in 2022 and revised in 2023, Russian and Belarusian competitors had been restricted to competing as Individual Neutral Athletes (AIN) without national flags, national emblems, or state anthems, while team events remained closed to both nations.
By overturning those restrictions, weightlifting has become one of the most prominent Olympic sports to reintegrate Russian sports infrastructure and state branding directly into its international calendar.
The move marks the return of a major international sports championship to Russian sovereign territory. Since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, virtually all Olympic governing bodies had stripped Russia of hosting rights, relocating events such as the UEFA Champions League Final in St. Petersburg and canceling planned world tournaments in ice hockey and volleyball.
IOC policy shift and sports federations’ readmission wave
The IWF’s decision aligns with a broader trend across international sports federations following a milestone ruling by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on July 7, 2026. The IOC’s summer determination lifted the formal suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), dissolving recommendations that had restricted Russian participation since October 2023.
The IOC’s revised guidance prompted an accelerating domino effect across individual sports governing bodies. On Aug. 15, the World Archery Federation announced that its Executive Board had lifted all remaining restrictions on Russian and Belarusian athletes, permitting them to compete in the Archery World Cup and World Championships under their national flags and anthems.
Similar reinstatements occurred earlier in the year across multiple summer Olympic disciplines. World Gymnastics lifted restrictions on Russian and Belarusian athletes in May, while the European Fencing Confederation officially reinstated Russian and Belarusian competitors in June.
Following the IOC’s July ruling, Ukraine’s National Olympic Committee (NOC) filed a formal appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, Switzerland, demanding the annulment of the IOC’s decision to reinstate the Russian Olympic Committee.
The Ukrainian NOC argued that the IOC’s actions violated the foundational provisions of the Olympic Charter by disregarding the factual circumstances – specifically the ongoing military invasion and the illegal absorption of Ukrainian regional sports associations in occupied territories by the Russian Olympic Committee – that formed the original legal basis for the suspensions.
