One Galaxy Watch 5 Pro user reported burns and blisters on their skin after sleeping with their watch under what can only be considered normal operation.
A post on Reddit shows blisters and red marks on a Galaxy Watch 5 Pro user’s arm (via Android Authority). Red marks and irritation aren’t all that uncommon for users, but they’re generally categorized as contact dermatitis. The blisters are new, though.
They claim the watch was on their wrist from the moment they went to bed after charging it to full, but that the battery had drained by the time they woke up. A dead battery might indicate the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro was active enough to burn through the 590mAh cell throughout the night. The user also notes their watch refused to power on after the incident.
When a lithium-ion battery depletes itself in a matter of hours, it puts off some considerable heat. So a burn this bad sits nowhere outside the realm of possibilities.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen reports like this. Samsung’s Galaxy Watch lineup is, for the most part, consistently safe. We’ve tested them for years and have never had overheating issues that leave visible markings on skin. Still, reported battery issues are not all that uncommon. It’s even affected the Galaxy Ring.
Users have reported suspected overheating with their Galaxy Watch Ultra, Watch Ultra 2, Galaxy Watch 8, and a few other models in the past, but none of them seem to have affected the user as much as the most recent Watch 5 Pro report. An argument could be made for contact dermatitis on some older posts, but this report holds more water – or fluid.
