Two persons died after gas exposure at the ESL Steel plant in Jharkhand's Bokaro district on Sunday, officials said. The company said it will carry out an independent investigation into the accident and take appropriate steps based on its findings.
An ESL spokesperson said, "An unfortunate incident involving gas exposure occurred in the plant in which an executive of the company and a business partner engineer lost their lives." The spokesperson did not provide details of the accident.
Bokaro Superintendent of Police Nathu Singh Meena said the two deceased were identified as Sohan Mahato from Ramgarh in Bokaro and Samir Ansari from Dhanbad district. He said the accident took place at the company worksite under the Siyaljori Police Station limits in Chandankiyari block of Bokaro.
Siyaljori Police Station officer-in-charge Ranjit Prasad Yadav said the bodies would be sent for post-mortem examination after the arrival of the relatives of the deceased. He also said talks were being held with the workers' union and company officials on the payment of compensation.
State Chief Inspector of Factories Manish Kumar Sinha said Bokaro Factory Inspector Shivanand Laguri had been directed to visit the site, conduct a detailed probe and submit a report at the earliest. "Prima facie, it appears that the deaths occurred due to exposure to carbon monoxide. However, we will wait for the probe report and post-mortem report before making any comment," Sinha said. ESL Steel Limited, Bokaro, is a subsidiary of Vedanta Iron & Steel Limited.
