The controversy escalated following remarks made during a press conference by Citizen for Justice and Peace representatives including Prashant Bhushan. The ruling party accused the opposition of using student movements to destabilise institutions, while Congress maintained that challenging and replacing the government through peaceful democratic protests and the ballot box remains the rightful duty of any political opposition.
