Jon Rahm has decided to leave LIV Golf after finding the new terms for the league unacceptable. This move puts a massive question in front of the PGA Tour: how do they handle players who want to come back? The tour closed its door on returning players last month, saying they will not talk to anyone under contract. Now the landscape shifts again as the financial backing for the breakaway league faces a shaky future.
The situation involves big money and deep history. Last month in the United States, Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection was filed by LIV Golf. The Saudi Public Investment Fund pulled its multi-billion-dollar support back in April 2026. The league still owes millions to the players who signed up. A London investment firm hopes to keep the league going with $300 million in new funding, but the roster must agree to stay.
The Window for Return Closes Fast
The path back to the main tour looks narrow for Rahm and others. In January, he declined an opportunity to rejoin the PGA Tour via a special program for returning members. Brooks Koepka used that same program to get back on the tour, but Rahm and other stars like Bryson DeChambeau and Cameron Smith said no to the offer. Brian Rolapp, the chief executive of the PGA Tour, told reporters last month that there are no plans to reopen that program. The tour will not discuss deals with LIV players while they are still under contract.
Rahm will be eligible for a new Championship Series in 2028 because he won the Masters three years ago. It is not clear if he will get the same treatment Koepka received. Xander Schauffele, a top player on the tour, thinks the DP World Tour might be the most likely spot for Rahm to play in 2027. Schauffele told reporters in Japan that he does not know if the tour has offered Rahm a spot like they did before. He added, “He’s clearly done whatever’s best for himself just like all of us,” when asked about the decision to quit LIV, according to GolfMagic.
Trust Issues Run Deep Among Players
The mood among the players is not happy about how the tour handled the threat from the breakaway circuit. Schauffele has been very open about his feelings. After the shock framework agreement with the PIF was announced in June 2023, he called for PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan to resign. The trust is broken for many. Schauffele said, “I would be lying if I said that I have a whole lot of trust after what happened.” This sentiment is shared by many in the locker room.
Schauffele stated he had no idea when asked if a compromise would occur for LIV players returning. He pointed out the large number of players who hold cards. “There are 225 guys with Tour cards and if you sat down and interviewed all of them, you’re going to get probably three or four boxes of how guys feel,” he said. The tour faces a difficult task in trying to please everyone while keeping its own integrity intact.
Old Stars Still Hungry for a Win
While the drama unfolds, other players are just trying to find their form. Adam Scott is 46 years old and still fighting to win on the PGA Tour. After placing 11th at the Tour Championship, he secured a spot on the Presidents Cup team. Since 2003, Scott has competed full-time on the tour with 14 wins, yet his most recent victory occurred at the 2020 Genesis Invitational. That is a long dry spell for a player of his caliber.
Entering the final round of the Baycurrent Classic in Japan, Scott trails the lead by one shot. He expressed his feelings after Saturday’s play. “It would be nice just to win anything, to be honest with you, at this point. It’s been like six years since I’ve won on the PGA Tour. I’m frustrated by that.” He feels like he has played good golf but has not made the most of it. The competition is fierce, and winning is harder than ever. Scott observed that this demonstrates the difficulty of winning on the PGA Tour currently.
The tour needs stars like Scott to keep the product fresh. The mix of veterans and new talent creates a dynamic environment. Rahm’s departure from LIV adds another layer of uncertainty. The tour must decide if it can absorb the return of high-profile players without breaking its own rules. The answer to this question will shape the next few years of professional golf. The players are watching closely to see what happens next.
