KUALA LUMPUR: A cable thief has been arrested following a joint operation by Plus Malaysia Bhd (Plus) personnel and police along the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE).
Plus said the arrest was made during a recent operation to curb the theft and destruction of critical highway infrastructure.
In a Facebook post, the highway concessionaire said the suspect was handed over to the Sentul police headquarters for further investigation.
"Through our continued commitment, the Plus team, in cooperation with police, successfully arrested a suspect involved in cable theft activities along the NKVE during a recent operation," it said.
Photographs shared by Plus showed two uniformed policemen beside a patrol car parked on the highway shoulder at night.
A man was seen sitting on the ground near a guardrail with his hands held behind his back as the policemen attended to the situation.
Other photographs showed cutting tools, including a cordless power tool, a hacksaw, a hand saw and a toolbox, alongside a severed cable on a concrete roadside barrier.
Plus did not disclose the date of the operation, the suspect's identity or the quantity and value of the cables involved.
The concessionaire said the theft or destruction of highway facilities was a serious offence that could endanger motorists.
It said damage to cables, safety barriers and road signs could compromise highway safety systems and disrupt their operations.
Plus also thanked the personnel involved in the operation for helping safeguard highway infrastructure.
It urged motorists to report suspicious activities along expressways to help prevent such crimes.
