Atlanta Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski is waiting for more information after quarterback Michael Penix Jr. suffered a rib injury during Sunday’s 30-23 overtime loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
Penix attempted to return to the game but could not get comfortable enough to continue, leaving his status for the coming week uncertain.
As reported by Marc Raimondi of ESPN, “Stefanski said Penix was ‘working to get comfortable’ after the hit, but could not.” He added that the Falcons would have a clearer picture after Penix undergoes imaging.

The injury occurred with 27 seconds remaining in regulation, when the score was tied at 23. Ravens defensive lineman Tavius Robinson sacked Penix for a 10-yard loss, and the quarterback fumbled on the play. Atlanta recovered the ball, but Penix struggled to get up before walking off the field under his own power.
Penix briefly returned for one play before leaving again. Tua Tagovailoa replaced him with 19 seconds left and completed a 14-yard pass to Brian Robinson Jr. before regulation ended. Tagovailoa also entered in overtime, but his appearance ended when Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton intercepted him on Atlanta’s second play of the possession.
Penix finished the game with 19 completions on 32 attempts for 240 yards and one touchdown. He connected with Kyle Pitts for a five-yard score in the second quarter and did not throw an interception.
The injury comes after Penix helped Atlanta win consecutive games against the Green Bay Packers and New Orleans Saints following his return from a torn ACL that ended his 2025 season.
Atlanta now faces an important wait for the results of Penix’s medical evaluation. The Falcons host the Chicago Bears in Week 6, and whether Penix can play will depend on the findings and his recovery.
