The government’s proposed auto policy could lower the price of the Suzuki Cultus as Pakistan prepares to introduce changes to vehicle taxation and import duties under a five-year framework.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved the final draft of the Automotive and Auto Parts Policy 2026–31 on Tuesday. The draft will now be presented to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for approval before the federal cabinet considers it.
The government will subsequently introduce a bill in parliament to implement the proposed tax rates. The policy proposes treating hybrid electric vehicles and conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles equally in terms of duties and taxes.
It also sets customs duty on conventional ICE cars and SUVs at 15% in 2031, without additional or regulatory duty. The Express Tribune estimates that the Suzuki Cultus, currently priced at Rs. 4.3 million, could cost Rs. 3.8 million in the first year of the policy. That would represent a potential reduction of Rs. 500,000.
The estimated price is based on the newspaper’s assessment of the proposed policy’s impact, not an official price announcement. The policy remains subject to IMF and federal cabinet approval.
