A 46-year-old farmer died by suicide in Maharashtra's Latur district after suffering crop losses and struggling to pay his daughter's medical college fees, news agency Press Trust of India reported, citing police.
Before his death at his farm on Monday, Shankar Abanrao Kshirsagar posted a video online appealing to the authorities and asking why he had not received government relief despite losing his soybean crop during a prolonged dry spell.
Kshirsagar, a resident of Borgaon village, had cultivated soybean on his small plot of land in the hope of a good harvest. However, a prolonged break in rainfall reportedly damaged the crop.
One of his daughters is studying medicine, but her fees had reportedly not been waived despite an application. The government had announced fee concessions for children of drought-affected farmers.
The financial burden caused by the crop failure, unpaid loans and his daughter's education expenses had left him distressed, Assistant Police Inspector Bodhankar of Limbgaon police station told Press Trust of India.
Kshirsagar went to his farm on Monday afternoon, recorded a video on his mobile phone and uploaded it to social media. His relatives and the police began searching for him after they saw the video.
However, he was found hanging at the farm by the time the police reached the spot, the official said.
In the video, Kshirsagar appealed to the district collector and asked why he had not received benefits under any loan waiver scheme. He also questioned why his daughter's medical college fees had not been waived despite his application.
Police said the farmer had been distressed by the loss of his soybean crop, outstanding loans and the burden of his daughter's medical education expenses before his alleged suicide.
