It’s been a while since we’ve had a high-street fashion hit that’s had the whole internet talking – and this season, it’s a coat from Marks & Spencer that’s sent fashion fans into a bigger frenzy than the retailer could ever have imagined.
The coat in question, called the Animal Print Faux Fur Trim Funnel Neck Coat, was released as part of the retailer’s AW26 drop and perfectly taps into three of autumn’s biggest outerwear trends: deer print, faux-fur trims and funnel-neck silhouettes. It also looks far more expensive than its £75 price tag would suggest; it wouldn’t look out of place on the Charlotte Simone or Rixo websites, with the main difference being that similar styles from those brands can set you back upwards of £400.
Which is probably why fashion girls jumped on this coat. And when I say they jumped, I mean they went absolutely mad for it. The animal-print design has sold out in every size, from 6 to 24, online, and a quick check of its availability in stores across London reveals just one remaining in a size 12 at London Victoria. Though what are the chances of that one still being there by the time you get there? I’d say slim to none.
M&S is well aware of the frenzy it’s caused, too. In a video posted to its TikTok account, the retailer teased that, while the coat might be sold out, there were still a few pieces left at its headquarters. The caption read: ‘DM us your size & we might even send you one out…’
A day later, the video had racked up more than 313,000 views and 2,825 comments. In fact, so many hopeful shoppers replied with their sizes that the brand had to react in the comments with a picture of a sad cat, captioned: ‘Us because we can’t give you all one.’ If that isn’t proof of a viral fashion moment, I don’t know what is.
So, where to next? Vinted? Well, only if you’re happy to spend more than the original retail price. A quick search on the resale app brings up plenty of listings for the coat – new with tags, obviously. The only snag? Sellers have caught on to the craze and are listing it at inflated prices. The closest match to its original £75 price tag is one listing at £105, but several sellers are asking for £150 – twice the original price.
It's now selling for twice the price on Vinted
Of course, there’s always the chance M&S will restock its sell-out style, but until then, the best way to get your animal-print outerwear fix is to look for alternatives on the high street. And luckily, as I mentioned earlier, the original coat taps into several of the season’s biggest outerwear trends, so finding a similarly chic style shouldn’t be too difficult.
From high-street versions that nail the deer-print look to leopard-print jackets finished with faux-fur collars and cuffs, there are plenty of options worth considering. Whether you want to spend less than the original M&S price or invest a little more in a coat you’ll wear for seasons to come, these are the styles I’d shop instead.
The best alternatives to the sold-out M&S animal-print coat
Love the original deer print? Next’s version has a classic fold-down collar and central zip fastening, making it an easy match for jeans or tailored trousers.
Ro&Zo’s leopard-print car coat pairs a faux-fur collar with a wool blend for a statement layer that will instantly elevate your jeans-and-T-shirt uniform.
For a subtler take, this button-through jacket features black leopard print and detachable faux-fur collar and cuffs, giving you two looks in one.
River Island Leopard Print Coat
Leopard print, faux-fur cuffs and statement buttons make this £49 River Island coat a bargain. Style it with dark denim, a simple knit and knee-high boots.
For a more understated take, Omnes’ animal-print jacket features a classic collar, patch pockets and adjustable cuff detailing. Wear with straight-leg jeans and pared-back basics.
