U.S. President Donald Trump campaigns in Alaska.
U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly announced a series of large-scale investment and purchase commitments from South Korea, Taiwan and Japan, highlighting what he describes as achievements of his economic policies. With the midterm elections just 20 days away, the announcements are seen as an effort to underscore his success in attracting major investments from allied countries through tariffs and other measures.
On Oct. 14, Trump announced on his social media platform Truth Social that South Korea had agreed to invest $50 billion, or approximately 67 trillion won, in the Alaska liquefied natural gas (LNG) development project. He said the investment was part of a trade and investment agreement reached with his administration and declared the launch of the largest energy infrastructure project in Alaska’s history. Trump had previously warned that tariffs could be raised if South Korea did not sign the agreement, calling for the investment deal to move forward swiftly.
Trump also disclosed specific investment and purchase figures for Taiwan and Japan, highlighting the results of economic cooperation with the United States. He announced that Taiwan would make a $4.4 billion equity investment in the Alaska LNG project and had pledged to purchase $70 billion to $80 billion worth of LNG over the next 20 years, equivalent to 30% of the pipeline’s total supply volume. Trump described this as the largest purchase commitment in history.
Japan was identified as a source of financing for the expansion of semiconductor manufacturing facilities in the United States. Trump said a $21 billion investment would fund the construction of two new semiconductor manufacturing facilities in Malta, New York, with Japan providing the financing. The project, led by GlobalFoundries and the U.S. Department of Commerce, is expected to create more than 28,000 jobs in New York State.
Trump characterized the series of agreements as historic achievements aimed at rebuilding America’s industrial base and strengthening national security. He said they are converting investment pledges from Japan, South Korea and Taiwan into massive construction projects, describing the agreements as a generational development that would transform the United States.
The U.S. government’s ability to generate direct returns by acquiring equity stakes in private companies was also presented as a key achievement. The Department of Commerce plans to invest an additional $955 million in areas including silicon photonics and advanced packaging. This would bring the government’s total investment to $1.63 billion, while the current value of its equity holdings has already exceeded $2 billion.
Trump emphasized that, under his administration, the Department of Commerce had become the first government department to generate revenue for the United States. In South Korea’s case, however, attention remains focused on the details and follow-up procedures for implementing the investment agreement, as well as whether the commitments announced by the U.S. side will ultimately translate into concrete projects.
