By Sher Bahadur Sarki, Bajura, Oct. 16: Residents of areas across the Karnali River in the northeastern part of Bajura district are waiting for ferry services to resume so that they can transport essential goods from local markets to their villages for Dashain.
Although Dashain festivities are gathering momentum in the villages, the suspension of ferry services has made it difficult for residents to transport essential supplies for the festival.
Local resident Dan Bahadur Rokaya said villagers were facing considerable difficulties in transporting the goods they needed for Dashain as the ferry remained out of operation.
“It would be much easier to transport goods if the ferry operating on the Karnali River resumed service. Dashain has already begun, but we have no idea whether the ferry will operate or not,” he said.
Although a suspension bridge has made it easier for people to cross the river on foot, residents still depend on the ferry to transport food grains and other essential goods in larger quantities for the festival, Rokaya said.
A few years ago, Swamikartik Khapar Rural Municipality introduced the ferry service on the Karnali River. The service operates for a few months during the winter but remains suspended throughout the monsoon season.
This year, the ferry service has remained closed since June and has yet to resume.
Swamikartik Khapar Rural Municipality said the river's water level and flow had not subsided sufficiently, making it difficult to resume ferry operations immediately.
