Yankees’ Ronald Acuna Jr trade hopes are unrealistic, even if he’d be perfect originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
It seems unlikely the Atlanta Braves would ever move on from Ronald Acuna Jr., and if they did, it would likely be one of the biggest trades we've seen in Major League Baseball in the past couple of years.
Not to say that Acuna would go for the same package that he would have just a couple of years ago, as there are some injuries and other factors that have to be considered, but this is still one of the better players in Major League Baseball, and at the end of the day, he's somebody who puts fans in the seats.
If the New York Yankees could land him, the fan base would buy his jerseys within 10 minutes of them going online. As for how the Yankees could ever do that, there doesn't seem to be a clear path forward.
The Yankees have some decent prospects they could move, but it remains uncertain what Brian Cashman and his decision-makers are willing to do over the next couple of months.
The Yankees could move on from a guy like Giancarlo Stanton, but the idea of him ending up in Atlanta for a player of Acuna's caliber seems extremely far-fetched. Despite that reality, one writer recently suggested it could happen.
“Speculation is already mounting regarding Ronald Acuña Jr.’s future, and the Braves could realistically make Drake Baldwin the full-time starting catcher again. What that’d mean for Acuña’s spot in right field is another conversation entirely, but the Baldwin move would open the DH slot for Stanton.
“Stanton knows the Braves well from his Marlins days, and his 25 homers off Atlanta pitching are his fourth-most against any team. Now sounds like a perfect time for an NL East reunion, and even more so if the Phillies and Mets make significant roster changes this winter,” Jake Elman wrote.
That said, Stanton could end up in Atlanta, as the Braves will also be looking for ways to improve their roster this offseason.
However, he's just not the type of player that would get traded for Acuna at this stage of his career. Perhaps the Yankees can move him and more in this trade, but if it were even close to a one-for-one deal, Atlanta would hang up.
